30 | Claudio Echeverri - 2025/26 (on loan at Leverkeusen)

An unused substitute, again, in Leverkusen’s 2-0 victory over Freiburg. That’s 6 appearances, 127 minutes, across 11 games (78 CL and 49 Bundesliga). Might get a full game when Leverkusen travel to Paderborn in the Cup on Wednesday, but it’s slim pickings.

and unused again, Leverkusen won 4-2 AET and brought on five subs, but not Claudio

Still, he's front runner for the Glauber Berti nearly player of the season award

Breaking: Manchester City are considering recalling Claudio Echeverri if he doesn’t play half the minutes for Bayer 04 Leverkusen by January and sending him back out on loan to another club.
City Xtra are running this story. There is speculation that he might go out on loan to another club but I want to see him at City https://cityxtra.co.uk/36538/claudi...y-recall-in-january-with-transfer-plan-clear/ . Let's see where City are wrt to the League Cup and Champions League in January. It might be a good option to bring Echeverri back to City.

Anyone really surprised by this?

If he aint good enough to at least train with the first team then there is very little chance we ever get to see these type of players make the step forward.

Have ANY of these players we buy like this lad ever made it?

Get him back, get him training with the first team and lets make a proper judgement on him

I guess they’re a relatively cheap gamble. We only need one to turn out to be the next Aguero or David Silva and it’s all worthwhile. Most will never be anywhere near that but we can probably still sell them on for close to what we paid.

Perhaps the lesson is the club knows better than you when it comes to loan destinations, i guess. To Girona with no complaining I think.

Alvarez? Jesus?

He looked a very talented young player but what I would say is that after we signed him and he remained on loan he wasn't particularly impressive. We've seen a few flashes of talent from him, but he's not shown enough for Pep to determine he's going to play much with us and a loan was seen as the best move. He decided to force a move somewhere he felt would suit him more and it's not turned out successful so far.

We have to recall him and either keep him or convince him to go somewhere he gets game time. Girona might be struggling but he'd play most games and Savinho is evidence that playing well there is enough to justify being part of our first team moving forwards.

I always think that the way a player handles this sort of thing dictates their future though. Pep's unlikely to be impressed that he took his own route and the writing could be on the wall already.

Whilst City probably preferred Girona because they can put some weight on them if it comes to it, a move to a Leverkusen on paper was hardly a disaster.

Ten hag is well known by Pep, the club are run well and have won trophies. We aren’t talking about some second rate outfit.

Ten Hag going hasn’t helped but the lad himself also perhaps hasn’t performed. I have no issue with him backing himself to try a new league and country and up against good players but if he was performing he would be in the team.

You don’t get starts just because your a city player

Not looking great….

I’m quite surprised this signing hasn't gone very well.

I'm not surprised at all.

Leverkusen are too good and too big a club to care about developing a kid for a different club. They have enough of their own players - senior players, plus academy ones, and Echeverri isn't a finished product.

Daft for him to want to go there, and a bit daft for us to agree to it.

I guess it may have been a bit different if they hadn't changed manager.

Why did they sign him then, pay his wages and pay us a fee to have the privilege.
That's a good question.

It's possible they did it because they thought he was better than he currently is. Perhaps they misunderstood how long it would take him to grasp their tactics. Maybe Ten Hag would have used him more if he'd stayed. There could be a few things.

But, the further up the pyramid, world rankings, or whatever that you go, the more the clubs rely on their own players and are less interested in getting loan signings as there's less chance of a loan signings improving the team. It can happen (eg Rashford), but that's usually when that player is 'ready' and not someone still developing.

Odd that he really wanted to go there, odd that they signed him too. Not so odd that it isn't working out.

I’m more surprised he didn’t make a good enough impression at City for us not to loan him out in the first place.

He looked like a little boy, I'd guess we're probably happy with his ability, but he'd just get bullied out of matches over here. Not sure that the Bundesliga is all that different though, nor many top leagues tbh.
