It seems from the little we know, that the cool thinking of the train driver may well have played a major part in why there thankfully doesn't seem to be any actual fatalities, up to now at least.
I don't know whether they are actually watching the CCTV from the train as they're driving along? But even if they're not, I'm sure he/she would have been well aware that some kind of major incident was occurring in the train. It would have been a natural reaction to panic and slam on the brakes. And if the train had come to a halt in the middle of the countryside, Christ knows what we'd be looking at now? I've little doubt, that them keeping calm and carrying on until the next major station before stopping, almost certainty has saved multiple lives.
Not the most important thing now, but something to bear in mind the next time people are insisting that all they do is pull a lever for £70K and we should automate the trains.
