27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

How about this:

Jurrien Timber (Arsenal) – 82%
Daniel Munoz (Crystal Palace) – 77%
Pedro Porro (Tottenham Hotspur) – 68%
Kenny Tete (Fulham) – 66%
Joel Veltman (Brighton) – 64%
Matty Cash (Aston Villa) – 64%
Reece James (Chelsea) – 62%
Kyle Walker-Peters (West Ham United) – 61%
Trai Hume (Sunderland) – 60%
Matheus Nunes (Manchester City) – 57%

Nunes is - when on form - OK (last in the top 10 list) - but really? Struggling after Livameto?

To me this indicates that you have no idea of what at top class RB is capable of - and furthermore you've no ability to rank RB's - Liveramentgo first - and then no one?
Hmm.

I’d hope his percentage is a little higher now.

I’m going to make a big call and suggest he’s better than Kyle Walker-Peters. :-)

I’ll add myself to the list of folk who will eat humble pie. This time last year I saw a player who did his best but a) thought he was better than he was and b) could never really get up to the standard required for the club.

Early in the season I saw Khusanov as the solution to our RB issues but now I can’t see how Nunes could be dropped. He’s been brilliant and finally looks at home in that position. It’s like someone flipped a switch and he’s finally got it - long may it continue.

Good on him.

Playing fullback in a Pep team is one of the hardest assignments in football - Nunes has stepped up and his obvious ability as a midfielder has helped him turn into one of the first names on the team sheet - who'd have thought and lovely to hear the crowd on his side during games. Another really top performance - same for Nico on the other side.

With all due respect. Speak for yourself only. I for one saw this coming a mile away. And it wasn't that hard.
Yeah tbh, it wasn't that hard to see he could do it.

Athleticism - check
Bull dozing runs (Agility and Dribbling) - check
Crossing - check
Experience - nope

He just needed the experience to know what to do in all circumstances, that lack of experience was causing the mistakes. And he clearly understands the role very well now.

At the end of the day, the blueprints of a clearly good footballer were there.

The reason the midfield stuff didn't work out is because of the difficulty of the quick-thinking in a 360 vision environment in a Pep system, that's alot harder to do, and maybe he could do it with experience but it was high risk.

Being a fullback (anyone who has played any football will know) is the easiest position to "see" the game, because it's literally all in front of you, so the mental burden is vastly less than in midfield.

Up to the level when there’s no fear of him playing Liverpool?
Check my summer posts on him. I couldn't name a better RB outside of Timber.

Cant tell how many times i scoffed at us paying 80 million for the Newcastle kid only for him to come here to ride the bench.

I think Pep just didn't give him a fair chance. He probably would have been decent there too. Not Rodri class. But as a box to box making Yaya type runs. That was his game before Pep broke his confidence before then rebuilding him in the fullback mode

Two really excellent examples today of how he’s developed as a proper defender. First half Wirtz was really getting into the game. Got Nico booked, could have had Bernardo booked and was offering some powerful runs.
He had a few yards on Nunes, tried to run him, Nunes made the ground up easily and then barged him out of the way, turned and started another attack.

The second was deep into the second half, a really testing cross to the back post, he was in the perfect position to clear with his left foot.
Not world beating, but examples of how he’s developed into a proper defender with great attacking attributes.

Was impressed by aspects of his game last season, mainly pace and athleticism, but it couldn't have been easier being asked to play there - he came in at a time we were regularly swapping keepers and had Khusanov alongside him a few hours after getting off a plane.

He improved as the defence became more settled and we're seeing better from him this season with Dias regularly alongside and a pretty settled back four. For games like today, I would have previously preferred Khusanov for his defensive ability, but game after game, Nunes is looking better and better to the point I'm expecting him to start.

I'm not sure there's another right back in the PL I'd swap him for at the moment

He always had all the talent you need. His weakness was his low confidence, the mental aspects of his game.

Maybe he was too impressed by the likes of Kev, Gundo or Rodders when he arrived (similar to Phillips).
But that has changed, completely.

I still remember that a Wolves fan said about Nunes "Great baller but heart of a pea".
Back then I knew what he meant, but that's not true anymore. He's playing with tons of confidence and wins 1v1s you really didn't expect.

Would be interested in the mental coaching he had but surely we'll never hear a word about that.

The thing that is quite telling for me, is how wingers don’t have him on toast…ever. Look at Doku to Bradley today. This never happens with Nunes. The criticism of Nunes has almost always come from brain-fart moments in games. Now there are no brain-farts, we are just left with a bloody good RB.
Walker used to have brain farts, he was only in the team for his physical dominance.
