Haaland’s penalties…be careful what you wish for!

Technique wise he has his head down. If it had been up yesterday he would have seen the keeper’s position and side footed it the other way. It’s learnable and am sure he will put the work in. The issue with erl tho might be the mental side - giving up the cup final pen is a pointer. Longer term it would be interesting to see cherki given them

I asked this on the match thread yesterday and got no reply. But I wonder what our conversion rate is for penalties in the Pep era. I'd have my doubts as to whether it's 77%. But I'm sure that if I'm wrong, some joker will be along in double quick time to tell me!
AI tells me this…..

Manchester City’s penalty conversion rate under Pep Guardiola is approximately 76%.

This figure is based on publicly available data from Premier League and UEFA competitions since Guardiola took charge in 2016. Here’s a deeper breakdown:

Penalty Conversion Overview (2016–2025)

• Total penalties taken: ~92
• Penalties scored: ~70
• Conversion rate: 76.1%

⚽ Key Penalty Takers Under Guardiola

Player Penalties Taken Scored Conversion Rate
Sergio Agüero 27 23 85.2%
Erling Haaland 16 11 68.8%
Riyad Mahrez 6 5 83.3%

Tactical Notes

• Guardiola has rotated penalty takers frequently, often based on form and confidence.
• Misses have come in high-stakes matches, including Champions League knockouts and Community Shield shootouts.
• Despite the occasional miss, City’s overall penalty record remains solid compared to league

I never feel too confident with haaland , i didnt with aguero! Our 2 best ever strikers!!

I dont like penalties taken that if the goaly guesses correct, hes saved it.
They should be smashed into the corners, a la shearer, toure etc. , unsavable

Id like to see foden take them.but if not foden ive no idea who
Haaland has missed 3 out of his last 5 i believe? Plus bottling the one in the cup final.

Maybe time to either practice his technique or pass them on

Said it elsewhere yesterday for me he just needs to put more on them, playing it safe with less power makes it saveable, put more on them, make it practically unsaveable and if that results in a couple more missing the target then so be it, it'll be offset by the ones the keeper can't save.

If you hit it hard enough, pens become a game of whether the taker is accurate enough or not, the keeper doesnt come into it, haaland has the capabilities to be regularly smashing them into the corners and should be doing so.

There’s nothing wrong with his conversion rate and he is a good penalty taker. It’s just that he has missed some really important ones. If we are playing big opposition in important games, we can’t afford to keep pissing these chances up the wall.

For balance, he has scored some big pens too, they don’t come much bigger than Spurs away, in injury time, when you’re trying to win a PL.

As for giving someone else a go…no thanks, I want the deadliest striker in the world to take our pens.

I'm not sure about the accuracy of those figures as Mahrez missed in the closing minutes of vital games at both Liverpool and West Ham

I asked chatgpt and it come with this article from 22/23

I always feel the pen taker should aim for the top corner, it comes with obv risks but a keeper can dive across they can’t dive upwards

Keep Haaland, but work with him in training to address the ball better and hit it firmer.

I took pens and my Dad took pens before me.

A keeper is about 8 feet by 2 feet fully stretched out, which is 16 sq ft. If the ball touches him in at least half of that surface area, it’s probably still going in! So, in reality, in a 192 sq ft of goal space, the keeper can reasonably cover only about 8-16 sq ft. That leaves about 180 sq ft available for a 1 sq ft ball to enter the goal!!

The odds are SO in the favor of the penalty taker, it’s almost crazy how often they miss!

However, let’s GIVE the keeper 3 feet by 10 feet down to his left AND his right, so increase the keepers coverage to the 60 sq ft from 2 feet inside each post to a 3 feet high block!

You still have 2/3 of the goal to aim at if you lift it AND the 2 feet by every post!

So, EITHER learn to place it in the bottom 2ft of each corner or lift it above 3 feet almost anywhere in the goal and it’s an almost certain goal!!!

In short, the psychological game played by defenders and keepers should be laughable to ANY PROFESSIONAL PLAYER who calls himself a penalty taker!

Haaland’s problem is that he sweeps the ball, rather than pinging it. That telegraphs direction before he hits it and reduces the force of the kick. These are both advantages he is giving the keeper for free.
