Haaland’s penalties…be careful what you wish for!

Technique wise he has his head down. If it had been up yesterday he would have seen the keeper’s position and side footed it the other way. It’s learnable and am sure he will put the work in. The issue with erl tho might be the mental side - giving up the cup final pen is a pointer. Longer term it would be interesting to see cherki given them
I agree, I was going to post about the cup final. I realise he didn't take it, but really to just give it up like that. Get Cherki or Nunes as an alternative.

wouldnt let him take another until he has shown in training how much he worked on taking them. stay one hour more after trainings with youth goalies and practice until his nose is bleeding.

i fucking hate those pens when shot is semi weak and goes to kind of middle of the area between center of goal and either post. I bet these ones are saved with highest rate.

I would rather accept a missed pen that goes wide from the woodwork as its overhit slightly than a weak piss shot where GK just needs to get the direction right and saves itself basically.

pen takers from opposite never do us any favours in PL so why do we ...

Said it elsewhere yesterday for me he just needs to put more on them, playing it safe with less power makes it saveable, put more on them, make it practically unsaveable and if that results in a couple more missing the target then so be it, it'll be offset by the ones the keeper can't save.

If you hit it hard enough, pens become a game of whether the taker is accurate enough or not, the keeper doesnt come into it, haaland has the capabilities to be regularly smashing them into the corners and should be doing so.
I agree with this. Don’t side foot them. Smash them.

No I think both stats could be true but Haaland is still a good penalty taker.

They *could* be true, but they're not :)

As far as I can see, Haaland has scored 3 of his last 5. Marmoush missed one during that time, but it's still not 1 in 5.

Who took that.
Marmoush missed in the cup final.
Have we had some since
No, Marmoush was the one I was thinking of.

I'm not sure if Cherki ever took a penalty in France, whilst Nunes and Kalvin Phillips have both scored in the closing minutes of cup matches.

Otherwise I'm struggling to think of an obvious penalty taker.

God almighty Id forgotten the cup final miss. Honestly cant even remember who took it.

Mooshy. Players also need to work on the mental side of taking the pk, as the opposition invariably pi££ around to delay and create uncertainty. The England team had physiological pk training and it helped ( apart from fish fingers, sancho, saka). What the hell is this set piece coach doing? I dislike Beckham intensely but he used to stay after training and practice shots, free kicks etc.

Mind you do any of ours actually train??!! Certainly not on set pieces.

If ever we get a pk, I usually think, yes we will miss. Opponents get one, I know before the ball is kicked we are a goal worse off. It really is a poor state of affairs for such a good team. Get it sorted City, especially with League Cup games coming up and god forbid Euro Cl play offs.

Don't let Savinho take them, that guy couldn't hit a barn door from two yards.

Wonder if Francis Lee ever missed any ?
His record for City was scored 42, missed 1.
His career record was scored 49, missed 5. Two of his misses were when he was playing for England - both in friendlies.

Haaland seems to miss when there is a big delay in taking it, Munich and this one, I called it in the pub, he seems to have some sort of mental block when it’s delayed and nobody still knows why he didn’t take the fa cup final one!

My feeling is that the goalie almost always dives left or right, and that by the time the ball gets to the goal their body is usually stretched out and at ground-ish level. Thus any penalty that reaches the goal at least three feet off the ground is far less likely to be saved.

More than made up for his miss, however some of the time when taking a penalty he doesn’t quite seem to connect fully. Although his record on pens is ok, still think he and I’m sure he will needs work on.

Not a great taker, but I’m pretty sure Anelka never missed one for us
He didn’t miss any and tended to hit the side netting. So not sure why you think he wasn’t great at them. Unfortunately he missed one in the champs league final for Chelsea though.

Against Liverpool I think that is.

I remember Mahrez and De Bruyne missing important ones.

Aguero should never have been taken off them. He had a pretty good career record and then for some unknown reason after he missed a couple, instead of the coaching staff recognising it was just a statistical blip, we started playing musical penalty takers and our conversion rate became laughably bad.

De Bruyne the same. He scored something like 6 in a row, missed 1 and got taken off them. Insanity. His career record is 89% and is back taking them for Napoli and Belgium (although he did do his hamstring last month taking a pen, still went in)

Just thinkin
Does anybody else apart from Yaya Toure have a 100% record with City
Or indeed any one got a career 100% record ?
Le Tissier 47/48
Ivan Toney 48/50

The two best that come to mind. They had different well-documented methods, but both concentrated on a clean, powerful strike and on giving the ball some air.

Id like to see foden take them.but if not foden ive no idea who
Haaland has missed 3 out of his last 5 i believe? Plus bottling the one in the cup final.

Maybe time to either practice his technique or pass them on
Interesting.
Foden has never missed in pen shootouts for City.

Still can't understand why he chickened out of taking it. Okay; if you're not confident, then it may be for the best that you don't take it. But why wouldn't he be confident? The guy lives for scoring goals, and to notch at Wembley must be a dream for him.
