Newcastle United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

We got the shaft there. Not happy with the missed chances, the lack of protection for Nico in the middle, but most of all the officials. I think rather than any ref favoring any given team, they are simply just fucking shit.

This was my argument for years. Just that they’re shit at their jobs. But the level of shitness seems to be increasing and it’s happening at vital moments.

And it’s happening in the VAR room where they don’t have the pressure of players and a crowd affecting their decisions.

Alan Shearer talking absolute waffle on coverage in Aus with words to the effect of:

'They got away with one against Liverpool so it's evened itself out'

'Pep should be more worried about his defence than being upset about any decisions against'

'Newcastle should have scored 7' conveniently forgetting to mention City also missed 4 or 5 clear-cut chances to score and had two stonewall penalties refused.

Think he's got a bit carried away bless him.

It is harsh. It’s not that he was ‘bad’ per but that world class elite level of Rodri really proves the difference in games like this.

It’s the difference between winning the league and being a runner up and that extra dominance he brings would have seen us control a game like that.
Any team is going to miss a balon d'Or winner but Gonzalez is the next best thing we've got at the moment. I just thought it was harsh to highlight him for the reasons I gave
We won't win the league this year because we're not good enough yet. Not because we're missing Rodri. We're a work in progress.
Example today was Cherki was really poor in the first half but got to grips with the intensity of the game in the 2nd. Played a couple of excellent defence splitting passes. Unfortunately he got subbed off when we needed a goal for players who have shown no goal threat virtually all season.

Sterling is one of the best players in the history of this football club and deserves far more respect than he gets.

Am I allowed to disagree with you...?
I only ask as there are so many delicate flower snowflakes around (not saying you're one) and I would hate to offend, upset or hurt you.... but the bottom line is I totally disagree with your overall appraisal of him.

the game could of gone either way, we didn't take the chances we had and to a point nor did Newcastle, especially in the first half they dominated the wide play and we gifted them chances from midfield which we failed to dominate, how we didn't get a penalty is beyond me but onward and upwards , regroup and keep the chase alive..

We didn't deserve anything from the game. Our defending was absolutely abject for the whole match. Dias isn't organising them properly and his lack of pace is being easily exposed. Gvardiol has also been very mediocre at CB. It's time to play him at left-back again and push O'Reilly into midfield.
Just shuffling deck chairs on the titanic

It deserved a draw. It would have been a draw if it was only slightly bent and not completely bent

I’m probably ignorant in my fume but…considering the red line is parallel to the 6-yard box. How is Ruben keeping him onside?!

Ignoring the fact it was his fucking elbow.

Even his elbow isn’t playing him on. The rules seeming state it is now measured from the armpit which makes even less onside.

I don't think we played that bad. The ref let the geordies get away with foul after foul on doku, and booked Linton in the 95th minute, when he should've been booked earlier. The foul on foden ,which should've been a pen,is a booking anywhere else on the pitch. Our poor finishing and shite refereeing lost us the game, imo.

He's a bellend who offers nothing in his "analysis".

Newcastle did well with their high press and compacted well once cleared. Always going to be a difficult game but when you miss 3 really good opportunities away from home.

Thought Cherki was the weak link, allowing players to get away and poor passing in the offensive third, leading to breakaways.

Still early days with this group, I see bigger things to come.
Cherki is a maverick type. Will produce millions of “moments” and win us games. Palmer esque.

But, his off the ball is very limited. Doesn’t press, doesn’t graft, doesn’t put a tackle in, doesn’t track, won’t put a head on an opposition corner and most importantly doesn’t understand what to do when the opposition is in a transition phase from back to front.

For me, you’ll get away with that at home but away against a tough opponent, you won’t. He’d have been more appropriately used today as a last 20 minute sub if chasing the game and needing a lock unpicking.
