Newcastle United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Got home at 2300hrs.
Thought we started well but didn't take our chances. Foden, Haaland.
They missed 1 or 2 aswell and Gigi made some great saves.
Both teams were poor.
Nunes and Dias were my MOTM by a mile. Nico didn't do a lot wrong.
2 x shit teams, shit result. Move on.

Note the ref was a total **** and booked Bobb for his 1st one yet Joelinton got away with 5 before being booked.
See you Tuesday

Leaving the ref, var aside, we had our usual problem.

Losing with a few minutes to go, and we're passing amongst ourselves, 5 yards in front of their penalty area, with precious few attempts.

20 years ago, prime rags would've BOMBARDED their keeper. I barely remember a decent attempt, after going 2-1 down, last night.

Just for once, shouldn't we be a bit more direct and actually test the opposition, instead of fannying around?
Totally agree, we just pass the ball around outside the box without penetration. We obviously missed good chances in the match, but for the amount of possession we had, we created relatively little. Pep is obsessed with possession, but when you are behind with 10 minutes to go, possession for the sake of it isn’t going to rescue the game.
I was also concerned at how we reacted to the bad decisions. Several players, most noticeably Bernardo and Foden seemed to lose focus completely and were just following the ref around whinging. I understand their frustration, but these are hugely experienced players, and you can guarantee that the more you complain in a game, the less you will get.

Been saying since early season, this is the lowest standard the PL has been for probably 10/15 years.
Before people start banging the drum about "yeah but any team can beat anyone on the day" that doesn't mean the quality/standard is high - it's nowhere near the levels City/Liverpool and Stretford were at in their prime. But just an opinion

I like Richards but that’s a joke. The handball should be a pen as well. Both arms in front of body is not natural. If that’s anywhere else on pitch handball is given. On goal line that’s a pen and a red.
We deserved a point yday, those decisions were all key points and every one was given against us.
I hate Richards he is “the joke”

It absolutely is. Below the ankle contact is deemed far less dangerous than over the ankle contact.

When the contact hits on Foden, most of the contact is on the foot and ankle. The defender’s foot is on the floor too.

It’s not ticking the boxes for a straight red.
Kompany got a red card Vs United for an out of control lunge despite not making any contact whatsoever with the opposition player.

At the end of the day what these wankers are doing is scurrying off drawing up a fuckin cartoon on a computer to whatever they want and then coming back and insulting our intelligence and expecting us to believe it! When we’ve just seen what really happened with our own eyes. Football as we knew it is well and truly over. I used to like watching rugby league until they brought the video ref in. Watching replay after replay from different angles bores the piss out of me and I can’t watch it anymore. But at least in rugby league it’s replayed with the video ref explaining what’s going on it’s transparent. This shite in the premier league they just make up to fit what they want to happen it’s bent as fuck and was there for all to see in plain sight last night!

Strange game, and it could’ve finished 4-3 to either side. Some horrible decisions though. 2 blatant penalties and 1 Magpie goal that shouldn’t have stood.

Problem with Phil’s not given penalty is probably that he had time to shoot. If he hadn’t we would’ve gotten it.

Micha Richards didn't think it was a penalty. The mind boggles.
I've seen it quite a number of times .... it is WITHOUT DOUBT a penalty, it was a reckless tackle, Wayne Rooney said it should have been given on MOTD ... and the Newcastle player knew he'd got away with one there, you could see that with the sheer relief on his face when he wasn't pulled up by the VAR decision.

VAR was a disgrace, and proved beyond doubt there that it's still got a long way to go for it to be taken seriously.

We were never going to win the league after last seasons ‘fall off the cliff’ but despite yesterdays result we are making progress and unlike last season we are so much more creative and offer a scoring threat.

We have to persevere with Cherki because most of the creativity comes from him.

Pep doesn’t get everything right and Savinho on for Doku was a massive downgrade.

His hands are also tied because I’m pretty sure if Rodri had been fit, he would have paired him with Nico to give us that much needed physicality to compete with Newcastle.

We were definitely on the wrong end of the VAR decisions and the tackle alone on Foden was surely a red card offence for reckless play !

The referee allowed them to foul and kick us all day without producing any cards.

Donna made some great saves (big difference from last season) but has to do better on corners and concentrate on getting a purchase on the ball rather than wrestling with the opposition.

Pissed off about the result but much more optimism than last season.
