Newcastle United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Tough away game. Would’ve been nice to come away with a point.

Halaand and Foden had great chances which could’ve have put us up early, but so did they and The Don made some big so that kind of cancels out. I feel like the Haaland should’ve put the first chance away and it would have changed the complexion of the game dramatically.

But…. And there is a but.

The kicked us all over the park from the first whistle. Doku, Foden, Cherki all getting raking, dirty challenges all within the first 20 minutes. No protection from the referee, especially on the Foden foul in the box which was a clear pen, and Phil carried that knock all through the rest of the game.

And the fucking prick Tonali, kicking our players and then falling and rolling all over the ground with the slightest touch in the last 10 minutes. 1 yellow for them the entire game was a fucking joke.

Also the second goal for them is a clear offside, the rule states that an opposing players hand cannot keep you onside but what are rules for right.

A lot of games left, this season will be a roller coaster and I really don’t think Arsenal will run away with it. Injuries happen, PL is the toughest league in the world because you will get a test week in and week out so I still back us to push right until the end.
All of that bang on. The fact that the ref ignored yellows for Tonali and Joelinton, in particular, totally enabled them to cheat, foul and waste time later in the match.

Small detail but had they been on yellows it wouldn't have given them the advantage to carry on bending the rules in their favour.

Extremely one-sided officiating yesterday.

There is something decidedly suspicious about Savinho still getting game time. Absolutely no idea what's going on but I'm sure it'll be a chapter in a book some time in the future.
Let's just say that whatever he's doing to convince Pep to play him, he must be f*cking good at it!

But he wasn't the reason for yesterday. When it comes to the defence, it's a case of 'you can't fool all of the people, all of the time' . Any team who moves the ball quickly against us will have some success. We could/on another day would have conceded three or four in the first 45.

Newcastle with that team everyone back is a top 4 team away from home and one of the hardest away trips, but our record there been pretty good!

I thought before the game it would have been a high scoring draw and maybe if both teams took there chance it would have been! For it’s only the ankle breaker that was a major wrong decision! Tight of sides it what it is!

BBC report “a contest packed with contentious decisions”. No hint of anything mildly controversial hindering the barcodes. No outrage that all the controversy was aimed in our direction to stop our progress. If we had anyone willing to write letters to PGMOL at our club, we’d have writers cramp.

No chance of winning the league.
Never control games anymore, lack character and hardly ever beat a decent side away from home.
Beating a poor Liverpool team was another false dawn.
Doku doesn't perform, we don't.

Don't know why Pep took Doku off, Savinho has no end product, as we saw when he skyed it over the bar.

And therein lies a problem. We're not really missing any attacking players with injury. Our only options from the bench are Savinho who looks useless, Marmoush who barely gets a chance and Bobb who is dining out on a last minute winner from two years ago.

If we start with the side we did yesterday, then we don't really have anyone that can change a game off the bench

Got back late from the game last night - my last time at Newcastle that as I'm not doing those bloody stairs again. It's a high view but you're so far up you've no real clue on specifics of decisions - Id no idea how stonewall the foul/pen on Foden was in the 1st half.

Thought we defended poorly all day and missed huge chances that we created so we really only have ourselves to blame. Our Keeper bailed us out 3 times before they finally scored, and we looked so susceptible when they attacked that it's no surprise we lost in the end.

For us to win Foden has to play well and sadly it wasn't his best day. However our subs baffled me - we needed a goal at 2-1 down and withdrawing our most creative 3 in Foden, Cherki & Doku for the far inferior trio of Savinho, Bobb and Reijnders made us weaker. We had to leave at least 2 of those guys on in that situation. Savinho frankly was a car crash but many of us have said this before. Oscar is still trading off 1 goal at Newcastle nearly 2 years ago - that aside he's lightweight and a mile away from the finished article.

We've made some real progress this season and our home form is pleasing. But in the league we've lost 4 of 12 games now - a quarter of them already - and that tells you we aren't a top top side just yet. We look a classic Cup team this season and an "on our day" team - we genuinely can beat anyone, but are still also very vulnerable when our big players don't fire, and yesterday they didn't.

So sloppy this game. And hardly a shot on goal. Simply didn’t deserve nowt.
Foden and Cherki very poor. The latter needs to understand this is the PL. He will hopefully.

Refereeing decisions went against us. But that doesn’t take away the sloppiness.
Cherki simply doesn’t have the physical capacity to adapt! It’s always being the criticism of him, even in a far less physical French league.

He’s symptomatic of the type of player we have purchased over the last three years.

Capable of some pretty stuff, will have one or two good moments or games, but like so many other, just never going to be good enough week in week out to win the prem.

See Marmoush, Sav, Doku, gomzalez, nunes et al.

I think Cherki has time to adapt. I agree he needs to change the way he plays in terms of intensity and physicality....he just doesnt have it at present and again like some of the others you mention (completely disagree on Nico Gonzales...he was one of a few who could step away from that game saying he played well). He has the skill set but he will have to change his mental approach - he needs to be harder, more aggressive and become a fighter, not just the guy who does the pretty stuff

Sav at present is lost....he just aint got it in his head or his feet....and I agree we should have taken the money offered by spurs

Credit to you mate, did them stairs a few years back when away fans were more in the corner. It feels like you are outside the stadium, like being in those flats that overlooked West Ham’s old ground. I wouldn’t go there again, for that reason and their fans being a bunch of cunts.

Last paragraph. No difference than most weeks.

Don’t get me wrong, I like gonzalez he’s a kid who you can see is trying to make the most of his talent, but he hasn’t got the capacity to be the player he needs to be week in week out, to win the prem.

Tidy on the ball, plays simple stuff, but it’s not good enough to make up for lack presence, power and pace.

I think we’re on the same page in that we recognise we need to be more physical, I think I’m less confident these players will ever reach that point where it’s enough to win titles.

Eventually all of the players and some will leave before we win our next league in my eyes.

Just my opinion, think Arsenal are more consistent. Its based on what ive seen from the team overall this season, its not a pop lots of teams are bunched up because they are inconsistent. People talk about who they think will win the league all the time.
Get a get grip would indicate im stressed in some way, im not. The only ones needing to get a grip are people moaning about an opinion, its a football forum after all, very odd.
Over 80% of people thought we would win that game many saying it would be easy. I felt it would be a difficult game and a point a good return. While not a must win season defining game it was indicative of where we are currently I fear, which is just a bit short of what is needed. If Arsenal win their next two games I would say its game over. But will they? We still have a chance if others underperform and we are within reach in the spring.

You are absolutely right. That was my first impression, the tackle was more like an attack on Foden
Wild lunge, missed the ball, could have broken his leg...let's get serious about this.
And all the officials on the pitch....and their mates in the park down south....
What's that ..about 10 Professional men....couldn't see that after looking at it for 4 mins ?
I sensed it ,as it happened.
Where did football go so wrong. I'm wounded.
Glad Foden isn't.
And we're soft as fuck as a team , no leader , other sides would be surrounding the ref , we just shrug and get on with it

As far as reffing performances go, that was right out of the 70's....fucking abysmal what they were allowed to get away with.

We need to kick up a proper stink about that, dips do it, rags do it, arsenal do it...but the notoriously passive nice guys will probably bend over and just take it. Boils my piss.
