Cristiano Ronaldo will be able to play for Portugal in their opening game at next summer's World Cup finals despite his red card against the Republic of Ireland.

Ronaldo, 40, was sent off for an elbow to Dara O'Shea's back during Portugal's 2-0 qualifying defeat earlier this month.

Violent conduct normally carries a three-match ban but Ronaldo has had the second and third matches suspended for a year.

Nothing to see here, no favouritism or bending the rules.....

FIFA is rotten to the core which is why at International level I like to watch rugby and cricket but football wise I only care about club level football.

Have you read the other WC article today???
"
The top four seeded countries will not be able to meet each other until the semi-finals of next year's World Cup for the first time in the tournament's history.

Fifa has announced that Spain (1st seed) and Argentina (2) will be 'paired' and placed into groups in opposite halves of the draw.

France (3) and England (4) will also be paired, which means England will not be able to come up against Spain or Argentina until the semi-finals, and France until the final.

This only applies if the four countries win their groups."

Just doesn't feel quite right to me - but I'm old school and thought a "draw" was just that RANDOM

I hope this means any 'lesser' player who may be banned for the first game or two gets the same treatment. It's a farce reducing his ban, but it'd be unfair for the competition if other teams end up missing players.
Nah - they only give a shit about one of their "poster boys".
Utterly disgraceful - I'm only surprised that others are surprised by the announcement.

It makes a mockery of fair competition too. It's just a completely standard punishment that a red card for violent conduct is a 3 game ban.

On a positive note, that's Portugal not getting out of their group. Unless FIFA go for one of their special refereeing appointments again.

Stinks, the more football goes on the less it matters about what is happening on the pitch.

Swinging for a player no longer matters does it?

So if somebody drops him in the first game can they have a 1 match ban too?

Infantino's a little weasel as well.
