10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

Don't think that this is criticism of Rayan (media will definitely show it as that). Pep is just wishing that he be more like Messi (team player, efficient, hard worker & no show off) than someone like Neymar (flashy, show off & lazy). We all know where both are currently. Pep knows that Rayan is a special player and he doesn't want him to waste his enormous potential. It's a reminder to him to keep his head down, work hard, do the basics right and then he can easily realise his potential and become the best attacking midfielder in the world!
Pep is moulding him. Hardwire the team ethic and decision making into him and there’s potential for him to be the best player in the world.

Nunes wasn’t happy with him either.

Clearly a flair player with immense talent, but also an ego to go with it. Whilst he’s chalking up Rabona assists you can’t complain. Very, very good today.

Looking forward to seeing him vs Real on Wednesday.
Yeah, the OOP issues are clear. He will need to improve on that for sure. He is already showing some improvement in terms of reducing the number of risky passes he attempts.

Cherki is still very young at 22 and blessed with incredible talent. Pep obviously speaks with him privately about his game and we all hope that Rayan fulfills his massive potential at City. Today he was absolutely brilliant and would have had many assists but for poor finishing from other City players.

What does Guardiola do...heap praise on him to build the young man's confidence. No...he berates him in front of a national TV audience for trying too many tricks. What the hell is the point of doing that...speak to him behind closed doors Pep. Do not embarrass and criticise him in front of millions.

Cherki should be feeling on top of the world but I bet Pep just ruined his night. Cherki is clearly a unique talent...for god sake let him play his game Mr Guardiola.

Get a grip.

Pep’s comments are disappointing.

That assist looked brilliant, and it was, but the danger is that because it came off once he'll be wasting many good opportunities by trying similar high risk tricks in search of the spectacular which will rarely come off.
I'm with Pep on this.

A pure pleasure for the eyes.

PS: When Marmoush was angry that about not receiving the pass, Cherki was right; he had barely received the ball in front of him to be in a position to pass when Omar was already offside.

Not sure what you would do with Cherki if he has a series of bad games. But I see so many contradicting yet full-on fans comments on Rico, Bobb, Mctee and Pussey: after a good game the fans hail them as the solution for future and demand starting position for every game, a few bad games later the fans ask for their heads to be rolling. Make very ugly personal abuses etc.

Comparing to this contrast, I think Pep’s harsh words are the most fatherlike reminders to counter the poisonous praises. It is Pep who brought Cherki in and played him regularly after all.

Yeah but in a game where the atmosphere was wank. and the only oooh moment was that goal and the excitment from the crowd as the replay came up on screens Pep didn't need to say anything publicly

All he had to do was say a good goal I am happy for Phil and cherki assist, not suck the joy out of it and waffle about messi.

He can tell cherki to turn it in in training not roast him on camera, for me Pep was disingenuous to us as fans being so dismissive of a rare bit of a wow moment, a genious manager but at times a right missery.

By talking to him about Messi, Pep didn't really choose the right example; Cherki is more of a Ronaldo fan ^^

Journalist: These days, some people follow players more than teams. Is that the case for you too?

Cherki: It was Cristiano Ronaldo. My earliest memories go back to the Champions League final lost with Manchester United (against Barça in 2009). I cried.

Journalist: Yet he's not really the kind of player you resemble…

Cherki: But in his early days, CR7 was incredible! His dribbling was breathtaking! Then, at Real Madrid, he became the GOAT. He and Messi are two extraterrestrials. They marked our childhood, revolutionizing the world of football.
No one can equal them.
