The film part that disturbed you for life...

went downstairs in the night when i was about 10 and ended up watching 10 Rillington Place with Richard Attenborough

A dark film.
I remember watching that with my sister and mother. When it finished, I jumped up off the couch, and immediately went into full Richard Attenborough mode (I like to imitate actors). My mother cried out, “You see who he identifies with!” We all three burst out laughing, and then went off to make a brew in the kitchen.
It was a fair cop. At least he wasn't a loser, unlike all the others. Well, in a manner of speaking…

Ye, but Medusa wasn't in it, that was clash of the titans.

Don't want to be too nerdy, but I'm pretty sure you're wrong about that. Yes, Medusa makes an appearance in Clash of the Titans (much more recent film, of course), but an earlier, and in my opinion scarier, one in Jason.

Edit: sorry, my mistake. Jason didn't fight Medusa, Perseus did. But I'm certain that there's an earlier film than Clash featuring Perseus outwitting the Medusa with his shield.

Fair enough. She isn't in Jason. What I now want to know is the name of the film about Perseus which I saw as a kid, certainly in the early sixties, and where she cared the hell out of me.

Edit: alright, finally got it sorted! There was no earlier film about Perseus. It is indeed in the 1981 Clash of the Titans. I wasn't a kid any more, but it still scared the fuck out of me.
I probably wanted to remember myself as younger than I was… :-)

What was confusing me was that there was a remake of Clash of the Titans, 2010, where they have her dolled up as a social media influencer who's distressed because her make-up and hair has been messed up…

If you want to fall asleep then yes. It is the gang leader talking to himself for a good hour.
Agreed, a right pile of shite, people only got interested in it because they thought it was banned but in reality kubrick just withdrew it due to death threats. And don't get me started on 2001 as well, a cure for any insomnia.
