The FOC thread.

I saw a trailer yesterday on Talking Pictures TV, my channel 82, saying they're going to start showing the original, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with Robert Vaughn and David McCallum from Sunday 28th December at 4pm.

I loved it as a kid and I joined the fan club and got my ID card, excellent!

An horrible thing about being an FOC is shit eyesight (and don’t get me started on hearing). We wanted an outdoor Christmas light feature this year and I’m going through websites shouting out options to the missus. “Here’s a Star” Here’s a Snowflake” Here’s a reindeers head” etc. then I say “here's an Otter - that’s unusual, a Christmas otter”.
She looks at me, fucking baffled.
So I squint hard at the image and look again. It actually says “offer” and was a just a scrunched-up chain of Christmas lights. The sad thing is, I could actually see the outline of an otter in the picture !
Gave her a good laugh anyway. Never a dull moment for us FOCs.

say what you see..............

Yesterday we spent the afternoon at our son’s place, spending time with two grandchildren. Maddy, just 2, is a bit wary of strangers and, hearing my voice was a little worried. Her dad said: “Who is that?” pointing at me. Realisation dawned, she smiled and said: “ Grandad……..old.”
Huh, I’m not going again till they teach her some manners!

In reality.

In 74 years I have never seen one of those.
Any else seen one or were they a myth?
Absolutely real.

They usually had a pair of sensitive RF receivers, tuned to the HF oscillator frequencies used by TV's, which, due to the design of the old-style CRT was emitted from the TV when it was powered on. The operator then used a pair or directional antenna on the roof of the vehicle to detect the direction of the highest amplitude signal and triangulate the signal to give a relatively accurate position.

Clever stuff at the time, but modern TV's don't emit anywhere near the same power levels and are usually heavily shielded. There is so much background RF these days, any emissions from the TV will be buried in the noise floor.
