The Labour Government

So let's get this right. Labour gave the junior doctors a massive pay rise and now they want more so go back out on strike whilst a flu epidemic is causing chaos around the country.

And oh well unemployment is going up.

Some job they are doing.
It was very naive of them to think that bunging them a load of cash would mean they wouldn’t be coming back for more.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised or particularly hacked off about the Erasmus news. I have no idea (because getting meaningful data on it seems very hard) as to whether taken in isolation we'd have been better off persisting with the Turing scheme or doing this. But I doubt the calculations were taken in a vacuum considering only the schemes themselves. It seems fairly obvious that the government is willing to pay a price for trying to improve relationships and alliances within Europe, which inevitably means the EU; given the geopolitical state of the world that seems an entirely appropriate course of action. The US in many ways is no longer a reliable partner and the threats from other quarters are accelerating so what exactly would people have them do as an alternative?

If you look at the bigger picture, talk of betrayal is bollocks. Unless you subscribe to the current US administration's view that European liberal democracy is a busted flush. In which case what exactly are you hoping is going to replace it? I'm under no illusions about this government or the EU for that matter but can someone show me a better alternative that is emerging, because all I can see is authorianism and plutocracy. Sure there's all sorts of things wrong with the current system but consciously making yourself a gimp for would be master of the universe billionaires doesn't strike me as a change for the better.

The RD (formerly JD) made it very clear last year they would be back for more - strike action rarely happens in a vacuum so presume the government failed to negotiate sufficiently well here. This is a problem Labour inherited so I have a lot of sympathy for Streeting. At least up until his hyperbole rant where he lost a lot of credibility - I’m sure some on here will point to his reported desire to bring in a lot more of the private sector as the reason for that rant.

In patient care shouldn’t suffer as consultants and speciality doctors will take on care. Non “urgent” out patients will suffer as a result (cancelled appointments) and it will negatively impact the backlog, I put urgent in quotes as things like cancer services will not be impacted but in fairness if I’ve got something wrong with me then it’s urgent to me even if it’s not a medical emergency.

It’s not ideal timing with this super flu like you say and I thought Streeting’s offer to extend the mandate was a sensible move that was sadly rejected by the BMA.

Could it be the case that they just don't want to work more due to increase in flu. they want time off work more than anything else to avoid the issue.

BBC News - Teachers to be trained to spot early signs of misogyny in boys - BBC News

Brilliant scheme. Tackling this is long overdue.
Sad that it's needed. But thanks to social media it is.

GBeebies et al will be all over the negatives of it.

Probably get 30p saying to the news anchor 'listen love...' proving Jess Phillips point.

Just tidied up the thread, but it's getting a bit silly now. Too much goading/wumming going on, preventing any serious discussion. Keep it sensible, and anyone just here to troll will be thread banned. Thanks.

Though the devil will be in the detail and ability to implement, I think this is a welcome step in the right direction and as you say long overdue. There will doubtless be some huffing and puffing in some quarters but anyone who thinks this isn't a problem that needs fixing is basically saying they don't give a toss about the welfare of our kids.

The cynic in me hopes initiatives like this aren't simply a template for a strategy of ameliorating the detrimental effects of technology rather than somehow trying to get in front and actually regulate it. We are, as are most governments, already hugely on the back foot and there's going to be further enormous pressure on our government in particular to back off when it comes to US tech firms, not to mention the post political career sweeteners that are on offer to our politicians.

I don't think it's about a long term regulation of social media (which is needed), rather it's giving teachers the knowledge and quasi-remit to identify the behaviour at source and then pass it to people more authoritative on the matter. It's a definite step in the right direction.

I don’t think they’ve been great, but they’ve done a fair bit since election day and moved faster than the Tories did for much of their 14 years. Some positives, even if they’re still perfectly capable of shooting themselves in the foot. To be honest though, I think my cock could have done a better job than the Tories did.

I wish they would reveal these measures openly , don't see why Starmer can't stand at podium to camera once a week and reveal what's been done, recently we've had the workers rights bill go through, back in the EU Erasmus scheme, the misogyny stuff for schools and loads more, these are big changes yet just go under the radar and forgotten about with Farage and co stealing the headlines every week ranting and raving about migrants or no go zones in London.

The Palace of Westminster?

Sky news have covered both the stories you highlighted extensively. Perhaps you should pick your news source with more diligence.
