Newcastle United (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Good performance all round. Semenyo settling in well and looks very clinical. O’Reilly did well as defensive midfielder. Khusanov and Alleyne great again. Ake looked a bit better as well. Bernardo everywhere. Doku caused mayhem.

Hopefully Foden and Haaland are saving themselves for Saturday.
They both love scoring in the derby.

Why isnt anyone talking about the 5cm tolerance ?
It's fucking amazing, last week it was the buzz word and now nothing.

I watched Ref watch for once the other week and Dermot was banging on about it saying it's always been there, been around for years.

Tbf, that Jay (Bothroyd is it) was saying "no one has ever heard of it, now all of a sudden we are hearing about tolerance"

It's complete bullshit, law manipulation.

I was aware of it so Im bemused that the ref and VAR werent aware of it.....
It is a shocker that the ref and var officials all missed it and drew the lines on the last defender and were zooming in microscopically. The last defender was irrelevant as Haaland's foot was 6 inches behind the 2nd last player - the keeper.

Great win but we need to stop moaning Haaland was offside. He was in front of the keeper but just behind the last defender, and the last defender might have blocked the ball without Haaland there, certainly he wasn’t with him stood there.
You mean the last defender who had him in a headlock. It was 50-50 both grappling with each other. Goal should have stood.

I know many talk bad about him (too old, too slow, bad decisions, etc.), but we will miss him very much, when he will leave, he is something special and for me one of the best for City.
This motherfucker was brilliant tonight and also in many other matches this season

I said this when it happened when the commentators were saying he was interfering coz he was holding onto their player. Their player had hold of Erling too, ridiculous decision!
If he’s 1/2 inch offside then that’s well inside the 5cm tolerance or are we not allowed to mention that.
That decision by the officials could well be the one that hangs them all out to dry, and I sincerely hope it is. It could genuinely change how officiating is done in this country and open a right can of worms for the cartel, pl and pigmol.

Great result. So pleased for our young centre backs.

Unpopular opinion but Haaland was offside because he was ahead of the keeper, not by much mind you. It’s an odd one because we don’t see it often but the line should be drawn on Pope’s foot as he is the penultimate defender not Thiaw. The only decision they needed to make was if Haaland interfered with play. That is subjective.
Which the referee made the decision on, so he shouldn't have had to go to the screen

Haaland did sweet fa again apart from getting us a goal disallowed and a blatant handball.
Was that his worst ever game for us ?
It felt like it.
He needs a break. As does Phil.
Our CBs are magnificent!!
And Trafford was superb, I think Donna is rubbing off on him.
Doku & Semenyo, what a truly outstanding pair.
That ref, a complete one sided incompetent arsehole. No way offside, any fool could see that. Both commentators on my Paramount feed said goal.
Anyway what a brilliant away win, well done the City fans traveling up there on a Tuesday night.
A great night all round.

But if he was wrestling him at the other corner post (or far post) he wouldn't be interfering with play. The ball only becomes active when it comes off Semenyo's leg, not from the corner. The goalkeeper is between him and the ball, he's nowhere near Semenyo, removing Haaland doesn't mean you magically get to place the defender where the ball is. It's pie in the sky to think the defender stops the goal otherwise.
I agree on the Haaland part.....for me the attacker and defender should be allowed to compete for the ball and there is nothing wrong with that.....thats the part of the rule I disagree with.....

But by the rule as it stands Haaland is in an offside position (that part is correct)

The interfering with play bit is the part that is wrong.....its a physical, competative game and players should be allowed to do this.

I thought it was offside. Pope was in front of Erling so there was not two players between Erling and the goal. You can argue whether you think he was interfering and that's the subjective bit.
I have always said that if you are offside in the 6 yard box then it should be called that, whether you are interfering or not.
Being in an offside position is not an offence unless you score or interfere. Erling did neither. Infact, he was held by the defender.
