Neither would Tonali, Bruno G, Anderson or Rice. Our midfield during the peak Pep years was an unbelievably high bar. Comparing anyone coming in now to that standard ignores just how exceptional those midfield options were.
I also think it's harsh to take shots at Nico G. He’s been asked to step into the role of the best defensive midfielder in the world, in a side that’s less settled and more exposed than any Pep team he's played in before. That's not an easy task for anyone.
Statistically, Nico has actually been very impressive. He ranks high for interceptions, tackles, duels won and ball recoveries, and his passing accuracy under pressure is brilliant. He does a lot of the dirty work that allows the team to function, even if it doesn't always stand out.
It took Caicedo well over a season to find his feet at Chelsea and Declan Rice walked into a settled Arsenal structure. Nico G hasn't had that luxury.
If we'd signed him 3/4 seasons ago, into a dominant and well-oiled Pep side, he'd have settled far more easily I think. We've seen far less talented players - Zinchenko, Delph etc play key roles because the structure supported them to do so. Nico deserves some time to develop, he's only 23.
