That's a hell of a leap. Bit like us saying the last two games have been a shit show let's close the football team down and see if we can get join the NBA instead.

You're right our media is pretty much out of control and a sound democracy can't exist without a vibrant fourth estate. However that's in significant part because the people who have been buying up our media and crucially those who have created and control new media forms have no interest in democracy and are in many cases actively undermining it. This is fixable (tricky but not impossible) with better regulation and legislation but too many people have become convinced that's too hard or will take away our 'freedom', in part because the people who want to undermine democracy are feeding that narrative. Ultimately the people who own the media and are actively undermining democracy are quite similar to the Chinese in that they are authoritarian just in a more plutocratic form.

Democracy is messy, complicated, imperfect and hard but giving up on it also means surrendering the gains of personal autonomy and freedom of expression that ordinary people have fought for, for centuries now.

We've let this happen but we can fix it too and when I look at the deplorable bastards who would rather we didn't try then it makes me all the more determined.

There is an argument for a benevolent dictator.
China is maybe a 75% benevolent dictator - great for them, not so good for the other 25% - uighers etc.

Trump in the other hand is just a fascist dictator, benefitting maybe 5-10% - a whole load of his supporters are just getting shafted, despite the 30-40% poll numbers.

As batshit crazy as Trump has been over the past year, it astounds me that credible youtube election result bloggers predict - as of now in the midst of all this insanity- forecast that Republicans would hold the Senate if elections were held now.

I've said precisely the same thing for quite a long time. But in spite of what's going on - some very intelligent posters on this forum whom I very much respect, see any curb on the ability to post/broadcast pretty much whatever you want as anathema.

I disagree with you about the Chinese model, however... it's far to draconian.

And, for those not understanding the subtlety between the distance mentioned and what separation means, I am being sarcastic!

I’d venture it’ll be defaced or tipped in the near future.

Talarico’s discussion of this matter (Ten Commandments in schools & public buildings) is worth listening to, even though I’m anti-theist.

40-45 years ago.. America was going through an AIDS epidemic which was largely ignored.

Currently America is going through a stupidity epidemic which is being largely ignored.

It takes 9/11 style events for something to get their attention or they just don't care!

To be honest I've often wondered why Google, Microsoft, Apple, Netflix, Nvidia, etc don't just move out of the US to Dubai or something. They're mostly software companies and get most of their sales from the rest of the world. Also their labor is mostly from India too.

Why keep staying when staying means being forced to pay bribes and possibly face boycotts due to being "American"?

It has to be in their calculation somewhere.. Amazon is the only big one that is mostly reliant on US for profits.
