Jim Ratcliffe - claims the UK is being “colonised”

Either you're being a bit dense or are trying to wind me up, but I'll give you some examples. Everyone is equal under the law, but everyone has to obey the law, or face the consequences.

Right wingers get worked up about Sharia courts in the UK. There are Jewish equivalents as well. Do I have a problem with these? No, as long as they're used properly, where people voluntarily wish to settle civil matters in accordance with religious dictates. Where we should draw the line however is where they're failing to uphold criminal law or failing to grant people rights they have under UK law, against their wishes.

I know, for example, of cases in the religious Jewish community where it's come to light that they've cited religious law as an excuse for failing to report cases of sexual abuse to the authorities. This is absolutely wrong

Also if anyone outside the specific faiths that usually go to these places were to visit a Hindu temple, mosque or synagogue, you'd expect them to respect whatever traditions went with that, such as dressing modestly, covering one's head or removing your shoes. That's fine as it shows respect for another community's beliefs and traditions. If women wish to wear burqas or hijabs in public, I'm not bothered about that if that's their choice to do so.

But, to use the Jewish community as an example again, in certain areas of Jerusalem inhabited by the ultra-religious, a woman considered immodestly dressed would be harassed or even attacked. If that were to happen in a predominantly Muslim area of the UK, say Luton or Tower Hamlets, then that's crossed a line.

Tolerance of others' beliefs is a necessary part of a multicultural society. Intolerance or refusing to obey the laws of the land because your community believes its culture or religion entitles you to do that is not acceptable.

I doubt Ratcliffe is making this nuanced point however.
Tower Hamlets is without doubt one of the worst places I've had the displeasure of spending time in. Was doing a bit of graft a few years ago which meant I had to call there every now and again and it's fair to say I've been to better places.
Moody as fuck.

I’m talking about immigration policy, not skin colour.

The concern is housing, services, and rapid demographic change happening faster than infrastructure can keep up. Questioning whether that’s sustainable isn’t racist.
You're right...we should question it. Why are we having a housing crisis and such..
Not immigrants fault, is it, though? We need immigration for the economy. They pay into the system too.

Or are you just talking about asylum seekers? That's separate subject. What are the "changes" you refer to?

we have a housing shortage because we have failed to build enough year on year. Land banking has been a problem for years - if you forced builders to build homes and flood the market the price of a new home would drop - simple economics if you are sat on a load of unsold houses price them to sell. Builders don't want to do that they want to build as many as THEY are comfortable with so as to keep profits high.

A knock on effect of making new homes cheaper will ripple down the chain and the home you are buying (if you are) is worth less that means your capital reduces - negative equity for some - I remember around 1990/91 me and the Mrs split. We had a nice 1930's semi up the road from the tennis and cricket club - we had done a fair bit of work on it and frankly selling it and getting out with less than a grand each was a result - at the same time my future Mrs (then unknown to me) and a workmate and fellow Blue were handing the keys back to the lender and abandoning their flats as they were worth a fraction of what they had paid.

And thats why we have a housing shortage. Builders are happy with the status quo and any govt of any colour plunging voters into financial difficulty would be doomed

Some are definitely not taking this well..

How come we get charged 115 times based on innuendo and wishful thinking but they don't for bringing the game and the league into disrepute??

Some real double standard that!

If you're classed as '43% English', doesn't that emphasise the point that the English are indeed a 'race' of people? (Specifically a West Germanic one, that's 'Germanic', not 'German', big difference.)

The English, or Anglecynn, arrived on theses shores around the 3rd Century, migrated heavily during the 5th Century, formed settlements, later Thegndoms and Kingdoms, eventually uniting together to form the Kingdom of Ængleland, or England as we now know it. They, along with Saxons, Jutes and Danes (Who later formed Danelaw in an attempt to conquer the island) formed several separate nations in what we refer to as the 'Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy'. They never really referred to themselves as 'Anglo-Saxons', more Englisc was preferred. The term 'Anglo-Saxon' itself was revived in popular vernacular during the Victorian era and grew in popularity to 'identify' the English.

Isn't history fun?
Hmm...

Key words there are "migrate" and "nation". Can you make a nation from migrants?

"Nation" is a cognate of native (i.e. place of birth) and in this context is surely an anachronism (i.e. the Anglo-Saxons didn't call themselves either Anglo-Saxon or a nation).

The guys a cock but in what way is he bringing the premier league or FA into disrepute? His views outside of football are not really their concern.

He's a fucking tax dodging, greedy, selfish ****. And he's a ****. Its important to remember that. Problem is, it will yank the chains of our stupid cunts. And they are legion.

I wouldn't disagree, but he did apparently speak about Manchester United just before that segment, and that's what the FA are looking at supposedly.

Fwiw I've not seen the full interview, nor come to an opinion myself one way or the other. That's just what was said on sky sports about it.

Not seen the whole thing myself tbh, just what ive seen is his own barmy beliefs.
Would like to know what the football angle is.

Most NIMBYs are also protecting their investment by objecting to diluting the market, so they keep their house prices high.

Yeah they all want affordable homes for their kids near where they live ....... just not there .......nope not there either .....no not there its spoiling their view .......

I know a case where someone with a big garden sold half of it having got outline consent for a 3-bed house on the site - then objected when the purchasers applied to put a 4-bed house on the site.

You can accept immigration helps the economy on paper and still question whether adding people faster than we build houses, gp surgeries, schools etc is sustainable. It’s not immigrants fault individually, but adding people does increase demand for housing, which makes an existing shortage worse.

We’ve basically gone down the shortcut route using migration to plug ageing and skills gaps. That helps the economy and tax income, but the strain hits local areas.

Countries like Japan try to limit immigration, partly to protect their culture, but that comes with its own problems. Jobs harder to fill, staff overworked and slower growth.

I’ve always wanted a high skilled migration policy for the UK, but like we see in Japan they are over worked with not enough people to do their jobs. We also don’t pay enough to attract the best or even keep the best as a lot of our young people are fucking off to countries that pay more.

The present gov tightened up on that since the last gov. Stricter rules. And yeah, we need to invest more in housing and such for everyone.

It’s almost as if everybody has forgotten why we are where we are, after over a decade of trying to turn the country back to Dickensian times.

With the Tories is was go after the poor and if they object, take the social services away from them as we no longer want to keep you as you are a drain on *society (*as in, us richer people).

Reform, which Ratcliffe is advocating, will go much further, as that is the trend with how the known and unknown leaders want to take us.

He is just being a contrarian, as per usual.

Never pins his colours to the mast of what he actually believes, but constantly tries to make the most spurious counterpoints to anyone who does, and thinks he’s a raconteur doing so.

Nail on the head, Bridgy, glad I'm not the only one who sees it.

Seeing people calling out fumble for being a helmet in this thread is also heartwarming, for that matter, biggest pseud right wing apologist on this forum.

Reportedly, he said this just before the contentious part.

"I've been very unpopular at Manchester United because we've made lots of changes. You've got all the same issues with the country. If you really want to deal with the major issues of immigration."

Not watched, just read.
