I remember when Spurs got a penalty for handball at our place. It hit Sterling in between the shoulder blades 2 yards outside the box but Clattenberg gave it.Technology is the problem as well as the solution though. High quality images from at least four or five angles will prove right or wrong to the viewer every time. Years ago this didn't exist. Do we scrap VAR and say "TV replays prove the ref got it wrong" and just accept it? My feeling is yes, that's exactly we do.
We mitigate this by having better trained officials, who just make fewer mistakes. That's how Collina defined a good ref and he was right. I'd have two extra officials at games in the two top divisions, so an assistant in each quarter.
Having said that though, yesterday's decision on the penalty does make me very suspicious, it wasn't even close to being outside the box.
We all said “we need VAR”.
