Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Great performance and really good fight from our players. As frustrating as he was in front of goal, I thought Semenyo did some important things in picking their pockets. Great substitution from pep at half time to bring Kush on, Gordon was invisible in the second half.

I don’t really remember them having any clear cut chances or making any bad misses. I can remember at least from us. Didn’t need to be as close or nervy as it was, but these were points we dropped on our run of draws.

Some suspect decisions too, particularly with an offside or two from them not flagged that lead to a corner.

Bang in it! Come on you ficking blues.

Not as convincingly as I would like to see it. And some credit should go to Newcastle who showed themselves and looked more fit than us. Second half performance again very mediocre despite not giving anything away. An equalizer was in the air, so was a 3rd for us that would’ve killed the game off.
I was happy Kushanov came on. As for Nico O’ Reilly … another great performance and he looks such a down to earth character.

Also if we put even one of those chances away most of this shit second half talk gets put to bed.

This is still a team closer to the middle of its rebuild than the end. Last season was an abnormality that came about after achieving something *no-one ever has*. I'm counting this as year 1 of the rebuild, in which by any normal metric you wouldn't be expected to be competing for the league, and yet we're only 2 points behind the leaders.

A lot centers around how many years Pep really has left of course, rather than just what his contract says at any given moment in time, but things feel like they're shaping up pretty well.
The last 15 years is the abnormality!
I’m just enjoying it while it lasts.

This was always going to be a banana skin game, but we got the points. Only issue for me was another sloppy 2nd half which has been a theme for weeks. Bernado was out of sorts towards the end and gave the ball away a few times. Most disappointing performance was Semenyo. How he stays on and Marmoush gets taken off was baffling. High points were Nico, Haaland, Rodri, Khusanov and Guehi.

some nearly performances from a few of the players, but so much to be encouraged by, semenyo had two or three lapses with his passing, but he still has the abilty to open the pitch up when he turns, marmoush has a wonderful shot and despite missing a good chance he was pivotal in the 1st goal and he has a super shot on him. Khusnov is now becoming such a wonderful defender from being nervous about him when he came i love him on the pitch he gives the defence so much insurance. Guehi is just a brilliant signing full stop he has steadied the ship at the back. Ait Nouri could have done better with the chance at the end but i am encouraged he keeps getting in that position, he did it at Anfield and again yesterday, the last bit will happen and he is growing into the side and gives us balance. Haaland now has genuine help up top and he is working for the side, super effort yesterday. Rodri is returning to the player we once had getting better each week and Bernie is the glue that holds it all together, add in Donna in the nets and i think we have a lot to be positive about, we are not perfect but we getting better and better and at the right time of the season. Newcastle were always going to have moments they have so much pace up top but we found a way becuase we have the best young player in the country, we can do this

If a game goes by quickly, I know I've enjoyed it. That went really quickly :)

Haaland is getting better and better all round and Nico O'Reilly is as nailed on for a starting spot in the world cup as pretty much anyone. Semenyo has tree trunks for legs BTW.

The Boys in Blue didn’t give in. They fought to the end. Thank you, City thank you lads thank you fans. You showed ‘em. You showed ‘em all.
Every single one of those doubters you showed them.
I love this team. Now they know who we are.
We are MANCHESTER CITY THE BEST TEAM IN THE LAND AND ALL THE WORLD SO THERE.

As fans we have to realise we ain’t that treble winning team anymore and the premier football has changed and PGMOL to both have decided to let “contact” in games go, let players drag players down from corners! You watch how Newcastle played last night for me it was a throw back to the 80/90/00’s with every set piece Newcastle had they put all there players in our box and went for % football! We also for some reason kept hoofing it from Donno for me that’s fair enough but if that is the instructions you have to win at least 70% of those long balls or you will be under a lot of pressure! Newcastle made it like a cup game they never stopped pressing running!

We have 6 away games left yeah we better than early season but our away record is W6 D3 L4 so now coming into the must win games wonder how many we will win or points we pick up out of 18 points?
The treble winning side wasn’t the treble winning side until they won the treble.

They weren’t the treble winning side before Christmas.

Then Cancelo went and Stones became a marauding midfielder and the world would never be the same again.

The team grew.

The dream, however unlikely, is still alive.

A man that's going under the radar in a number of these posts. Bernardo Silva, who for nearly nine years has run his socks off all over the pitch, maintaining possession, giving us options, harrying, playing short cunning balls, playing defensive midfield or out on the wing or wherever Pep has wanted him to. He did it last night, for the umpteenth time. When he goes, we'll understand what we had. He's not quite up there with Merlin and Kev in his skills, but in his importance to the team he's been every bit as important.
Since this may be his last season, I'll say it again, and I'll keep repeating the accolade — a great servant to the club, and a very fine footballer.

Dan Burn. Heard a few say he should have been sent off. But why?

And would it have been before the bernado foul on him?

Constantly wrestling Haaland to the ground and yes

One of many brutal fouls — absolutely smashed into Erling's back in our box before the ball was anywhere near either of them. Erling was mightily disgusted that the ref let it go, you could see it on his face. A clear second yellow.

any pics?

I'll run through the full match replay on the OS and get back on this one. It was in the second half. I give full credit to Newcastle for giving us a hell of a game, but my clear impression was that they had been told — or had collectively decided, more probably — to rough us up much more in the second half. They were sharing out the yellow cards very cunningly.

Caught his achiles too did he not in separate foul

Agree with everything, but for me Bernardo has reached a higher level in games against the best teams in the world, including skills wise, than David or Yaya. He has scored more goals at Anfield, Old Trafford and Bernabeu than some of our older legends combined.

For example, his run at Anfield, where he dribbled past 5-6 Liverpool players including VVD, would have finished with the best assist in PL history had Foden scored from that chance. Or his performances against Bayern or Real in the treble season where he was MOTM in 3 of the 4 games against them.
