Denton and Gorton by-election - Green Party wins

I see now what the "few months" was referring to namely his son reaching 18 and becoming classed as an adult.
I've just told you what I think of Starmer btw, I'm not a fan but the alternatives are probably worse.
Ah, sorry. My phone screen has seen better days so i misread your post! :)

I’m not talking about the empire and hundreds of years ago. I’m talking about today. Why would we want any immigrant arriving who can’t speak English to a decent standard to begin with? Possibly some very limited settings where they would be needed, but to be a productive citizen of this country who contributes financially to society, you need to be speaking English from day one and to a high standard.
Wrong.

Do you also apply the same standards to the Brits who are now living in Spain, France, Cyprus etc.?

So many people on this thread appear to have been remotely triggered and their decades in the making concrete beliefs (built on foundations of nothing but prejudice and ignorance) are just flowing out of them.

If only the politicians and the media knew of this phenomenon, they'd be able to manipulate and control your very thoughts and actions on an almost daily basis. Almost.

Funny really. Carry on, as you were, don't let me disturb you.....

They should, yes.

I wouldn’t dream of moving to another country and not learning the language to a decent level either before going or in the immediacy of having moved there to live and work.

Posts like this do disturb me but not in the way you meant.

Surely depends on the circumstances. If you’re escaping war or famine then how on earth are you going to learn English? Agree with the English who have the resources to learn another language definitely should.

Calm down, you brought up the Opium Wars!

So what was the point of your comment if not to somehow link the experiences of the Chinese population 200 years ago to the possible (probable in your eyes) repetition of outcomes this time?
My point is that opiate drug addiction was considered a problem in this country long before legal restrictions were first introduced in the 1920s.

I know you will find this hard to believe but I carry no torch for Starmer, he's probably a gonner in May but it'll be worse if Red Ange gets the gig - an open door for Reform.

Not sure that analysis is correct. The polling to date in this bye-election suggests that Labour's problem going forward isn't presenting an open door for Reform, they've already done that to some degree and Reform are probably close to their ceiling in terms of people shifting from Labour.

The bigger issue they appear to have is bleeding 'progressive' supporters to the Greens. If anything, and notwithstanding your view of her, Rayner might be able to counteract some of that.

Didn't mean the armies, it was those that settled and stayed on the land, the army had taken, doubt many of those land owners and farmers bothered learning the local language, if they did they wouldn't speak it when they arrived.
How many of those leaving the UK to settle in Spain or France went speaking the languages? I think the vast majority that come not speaking English work hard learning it and ensuring their children are educated and speak English, whereever in he world they have come from..
Must be my mistake then sure you quoted British Empire which like all empires was created by military conquest, followed by settlers who were overlords supported by the Military who probably spoke enough of the local language to get by, the big difference is of those who are migrating to France and Spain is they’re mainly not making lives for families there more like running up to death, if you were intending to be generational there learning the language is pretty essential.

Remember the Opium wars at all?
yeah we did that and the boxer revolution at school as part of the history curruculum

Not sure what the British empire being a drug cartel and running opium to china causing mass addiction amongst the subjects of Qing has to do with decriminalisation in a modern age.

just coming home down gorton lane (only place I have seen a reform placard on a fence near me) and down the back of hammersmith rd to cut through peter pan park a few new green signs have gone up that weren't there this morning, also went past the greens still out canvasing on Contable St.

With polls so close whoever can be arsed to tread the streets could well swing it

Opium addiction was a problem in this country too. Sherlock Holmes wasn't alone in Limehouse, the heroin trade was firmly established here in Victorian times and grew steadily before legal restrictions were introduced.

I live in Denton and haven't received polling card
But apparently if you live in east Denton like me your constituency is now Ashton Under Lyne

Yes and the first regulations came in. due to concerns of soldiers on leave in WW1 using opioids to destress tge horros of trench warfare

the dangerous drugs act came in that made them only available through phamacists, hospitals and doctors, pretty and regulated and the production and distribution controlled much what the greens as proposing.

only when in 1971 the dangerous drugs act criminalised them and took them out of the medical and authorities control and it became a criminal enterprise again.

The opium wars had nothing to do with that
