Denton and Gorton by-election - Green Party wins

I don't understand why Labour supporters are getting arsey about the suggestion that Labour would rather see Reform win than the Greens, it seems fairly apparent that's the case. Logically a Reform win just gives them a slightly bigger version of the headache they've already got, a Green win turns things into a giant migraine.

Assuming it is a very close three way race, it almost doesn't matter if Labour scrape home; if the Greens run them close people will still see them as a viable progressive alternative. Rather than try to trash the Greens, Labour would be better employed thinking about what it is that is pushing people in that direction in the first place.

The people in charge of the Labour Party these days despise the left of the party more than right-wingers. They described them as fleas that they shook off.

Now that the voting is in, I feel I can safely reveal who I voted for.

Britain needs change, Gorton and Denton needs change. We've been stagnating and plodding on from one disaster to the next, with no real scope or direction and it is simply not good enough.

The 'established' parties have had the crack at the whip too many times and nothing seems to improve. I needed to be bold, I needed to realise change starts with us, the voters, and I made that change today.

So arise, Sir Oink A Lot MP!

A final poll was carried out by Opinium between February 16 and 24 February, ahead of election day. The study included 401 complete responses, and 339 who gave a voting intention in the by-election.

The results of that poll for all voters showed:

  • Green: 28%
  • Reform: 27%
  • Labour: 28%
  • Conservative: 6%
  • Lib Dems: 4%
  • Other: 6%
The results for people likely to vote (7+ out of 10) showed:

  • Green: 30%
  • Reform: 28%
  • Labour: 28%
  • Conservative: 6%
  • Lib Dems: 4%
  • Other: 5%
Speaking of the survey results ahead of the election, James Crouch, head of policy and public affairs at Opinium said: “The Gorton & Denton by-election is shaping up to be an incredibly tight and unpredictable three-way race, with this latest poll also suggesting the Greens could benefit more than Labour from tactical voting in the final days of the campaign.

"Since the July 2024 General Election, Labour has been squeezed from both sides, losing ground to Reform on the right and to the Greens on the left. That leaves the result finely balanced and highly sensitive to even small shifts as polling day approaches.

The people in charge of the Labour Party these days despise the left of the party more than right-wingers. They described them as fleas that they shook off.

Labour has been hijacked by Starmer and Mandelson. It should be a broad church. By alienating the left they have sown the seeds of its demise and been Reform's most powerful recruiting sergeant.

By putting himself first and blocking Burnham, Starmer is to blame for the likely defeat.

I'm a Labour member who is proud to be a socialist without being extreme in any way yet I don't mind who wins as long as its not a fascist party be that Reform or Rupert Lowe's brand of fascism.

A close run by election, I thought an exit poll would be nailed on.

Any reason why one hasn't been done?
Dunno, but there was nobody outside our polling station and I don't know of any at two other stations either. I asked a few hours ago for the same thing and it just looks like they didn't hold one.
