Remember..March 1981.PAUL POWER!

I was in there..I think it was the first time a semi -final went to extra time instead of a replay.
That’s correct. Semi finals went to replays after 90 minutes prior to that season. Both SFs went to extra time - Spurs beat Wolves after a replay controversially played at Highbury.

I was there and behind the goal.. Seemed to take forever for Powers goal to come down and over the line.
Absolutely fantastic atmosphere and it was kicking off everywhere outside the ground and near Lime Street Station.
We gave as good as we got and absolutely twatted the scouse cunts after the replay.. Loads of them parked off Oxford Road and they really got battered in Whitworth Park on way back to them.
Very different times then but always a buzz going to games especially to Murkeyside and London.
Most of the lads from then are probably pensioners now.

One of the great classic away games. The replay at Maine Rd was good as well. And how did we sell 52k tickets in a couple of days or was it pay at the gate?
Pay at the gate. I can't recall any game at Maine Road in those days being ticket only on the terraces. I remember standing in the Kippax for a Dippers v Everton semi-final midweek replay at Maine Road (late 70's IIRC) and that was pay at the turnstile.

I was behind the goal & e could see the ball coming towards us in slow motion, went mental, I think we beat them at Maine road. There was loads of mither on way back to coaches, also Everton fans to our right were trying to intimidate us throughout the game. It felt really nasty, was it Ipswich in the semi, Paul Power free kick I think.

Yeah, I was there too. In the upper tier seats right behind the goal. Power's goal seemed to take an eternity to cross the line and into the net but one of the very few goals I remember from that time and the utter bedlam and elation of the fans. My Dad must have done a very good job shielding me outside as I can't remember any mither, when there was quite clearly loads going on everywhere.

Replay was good too, in the North Stand behind the goal for that one, same block as Big Helen.

Was at Lime Street after that game .... about 30 of us chased a mob of Everton up a nearby street and gave them a right kicking near the station.

We got the bus from near the ground and when we got off a mob of them were waiting..we just steamed into them and they soon fucked off.
It was very tasty after the semi v dippers in league cup a month or two earlier at klanfield too..we had a great following for both games and more than held our own..
Times flies eh..fuck me I'm 68 now and no way does it seem that long ago when we played them

Yep, time certainly does fly ..... I can clearly recall going as a 14 years old to watch my my first City game back in late 1969, and it only seems like yesterday ... and I'm 69 now!

In answer to the OP; would it really be the sort of game that you'd remember on it's anniversary? Various Wembley trips; yes. The 6-1; yes. The 5-1s (both of them); yes. Istanbul; yes. The Bradford promotion game? Yes. Even the 10-1, though that's now been equalled! Not sure the Everton game ranks as highly in our collective memory. Don't get me wrong; they were epic games. Maine Road was about as rammed as I'd seen it for the replay. I was in my usual seat (North Stand, block P, seventh row). From memory, all around me was Everton fans. But they were okay, no hassle with them. Though I believe it got spicy behind the Kippax after the game.

I can't remember my first game but I know my dad took me in 1961.. I was 3 year old..it was either take me or not go according to my mum lol.
Although our generation watched some crap football at times mainly from the 80s onwards the joy of going to games and the being stood with other blues was unrivalled.
The modern generation get to watch much better football but miss out on the crazy days we used to have.
Pay at the gate for away games and standing with your mates and then sticking together when it inevitably kicked off after the game.
Great days although sometimes it was fucking scary lol

Great day. It got a bit lively afterwards, 4 Evertonians cornered me and I got pushed up against a lamp post. I thought I'd been stabbed, but what I thought was blood was actually sweat pouring down my back.

Heart of a lion.

Your nerve wracking experience jjust reminded me of one of my mates ordeals after a match at Everton .... he's a rag and for some reason had decided to try to get a train back to Lime Street from a little station somewhere near Goodison ... he's stood on the platform and half a dozen Everton fans turn up and, spotting his United scarf, surround him and ask him .. what's black and blue and found on the ground ??

He says i don't know, to which they replied it's YOU mate, just before they they battered him to the floor, and put him in a Merseyside hospital for the next four days!!

He must have had a death wish, wearing a Rags shirt on Murkyside. Not sure he deserved those odds, mind; 6 against one. Even if he is a rag.

Yeah, definitely different times to today .... I don't think I missed a game back then, around eight of us in our 'little gang' used to travel all over the country by train or coach watching City .... so many cherished memories, even though the hooligans everywhere did their level best to spoil it all.
