Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

You have to be fuckin joking - they'll pick us off just like they did tonight.
We had, near enough, 60% possession - from that we had 4 shots on target. You're expecting us to score all those in 6 days time????
It's done
Exactly, I think we'll play better

Feel like we felt they were there for the taking, but made a grave error. I thought 3-0 flattered Real at half-time personally - 2 worldies and 1 top finish after a lucky deflection. But, it was alarming seeing how quickly Real went from back to front against us. The high line with Guehi and Dias is criminal, and playing wingers, along with 2 central forwards is suicidal. Poor crosses cause transitions, and when you have zero legs in midfield, you cannot stop counters.

In addition, I think Assistant Pep has made us easier to play through. It's staggering how exposed we are when the first line of the press is beaten. Equally, our build up is terrible, and I don't think it is all on the keeper. We haven't found a way to counteract man for man pressing at all.

But, I think a lot of it comes down to extremely poor squad rebuilding. We have now signed a plethora of players who aren't at the level. Marmoush, Doku, Savinho, Reijnders, are just not good enough for where we want to be. It's debatable that Semenyo is - numbers wise he's been good, but i'm not sure he fits us all that well, and if his numbers just come at the expense of Haaland scoring, we are no better off. I'm not even that convinced on Guehi - because I don't think you can partner him with Dias and play a high line.

There is also a very serious question about Foden in there somewhere. Top players don't usually drop to his current level for almost 2 years and then recover from it. I don't know what's gone on with him, but nowhere to be seen tonight when we badly need a goal - pretty much tells you everything.
Excellent measured post that mate.

What doesn’t bother me is the actual result, as I never for one minute thought we were good enough to win the Chumps this year, it was just everything about tonight and the manner of the defeat which were so disappointing.

The scary thing is sometimes you don't have to be a great team to win it ? But the one thing you can not be is SHIT and tonight we were shit,

Pep should know better, it's a 2 legged tie, so don't lose the tie in the first leg ? make it hard and stink the place out
pack the defence and play 4 or 5 in midfield with Haaland on his own. Don't play 2 wingers without 2 fullbacks, that is criminal and an open door to get thumped and lose the tie

We thought we could expose them tonight.

We thought because of their bad form and weak full backs we could play the game out wide with two killers in the box (Haaland and Semenyo).

Leaving Khusanov to deal with their only threat which was Vini JR.

I can see how and why the plan was put together but tbh it was crazy.

Rodri and Nico G double pivot and try to counter would be a sensible idea in a first leg at the Bernabeau.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but our plan didn’t work and Valverde put in a generational performance.
Funny how so many of their players put in "generational performances" against us isn't it

When did pep win his penultimate CL?
As much as Pep has been great for us domestically, and as much as we wouldn't have won as many titles with any other manager, his brainfarts in Europe cannot be erased from memory.

We had the best team in Europe arguably from 2017 to 2024 and had one Champions League win to show for it. The Liverpool (first leg), Tottenham (first leg), Lyon and Chelsea defeats were all a direct result of him needlessly tinkering with formations and selections, whereas if we'd stuck to playing our way instead of trying to overthink things, we'd have likely won all four ties.

Why move? There's no reason to move if he knows he's not gonna get the ball. He literally has nothing to do and he's not the type of player that can drop deeper.
The number of balls, that go across the 6 yard area and he's nowhere to be seen

If the knockout football is a roll of dice as per you than why has Real won it 6 times in last 12 years.

Never said it was a roll of the dice.

Real Madrid have the closest "style" to consistent success as you can get. But a lot of that is mental and not even down to a specific coach. They know how to punch when the opening is there, they know to be patient and sit back for the majority of games. But every once in a while they get twatted 4-0 at the Etihad.

It also helps that they're loaded with world class talent and have been for the last 30 years.

But even they hadn't won it for over 10 years before the Ronaldo era went off the way it did.

It's not hindsight though. We should always play two holders away against the top European teams. We were much more pragmatic during the treble-winning season. Lots of our fans have been saying this for years.

Think I’ll stick with my earlier assessment - ‘shithouses’
Too many players coasting, doing the absolute minimum to get by.
No fight.
No desire.
No heart.
No pride.
I don’t give a fuck how shit we used to be or what we’ve won.
These levels of effort are totally unacceptable.
These players are on top money and at a top club and I expect better.
The club raised the levels to be elite and raised my expectations accordingly.
Now cos the players can’t be arsed the expectations are supposed to drop also?
Nah fuck that, I demand better.
We’ve built an elite mentality over a ten year period and this current lot have destroyed that in 18 months.
We’ve currently got a squad full of players who believe they’ve made it and that’s that.
We’re a lazy team.
Maybe Peps got too comfortable being here too long cos these players need a rocket up their arses and it doesn’t look like he’s able to motivate them, fire them up or even scare them into actually fighting to win a game.
He’s far from blameless too.
We’re currently piss poor in one of the poorest premier leagues I can remember.
Arsenal poor but the best of a bad lot.
Us poor.
The scum sacked a manager and poor.
Chelsea sacked a manager and poor.
Liverpool close to sacking a manager and poor.
Villa have probably overachieved but that’s more than likely cos everyone else is so shit.
Dogshit football with dogshit mentality.
I don’t even get angry anymore cos I expect this lack of effort, heart and desire.
Look forward to your posts when you get angry.

Ties finished, there is absolutely no evidence we will turn it around.

Pep might aswell play trafford up front if he wants to feed his fukin obsession with stupid line ups.

Absolutely criminal after all his experience and knowledge he still picks systems and line ups like this. He clearly dose not learn or is too fukin arrogant to question himself.

I can not believe he actually planned for this game and sat and thought in what fukin world playing savinho was a good idea.
