Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Absolute shambles from Pep and the lineup he put out, very, very unhappy and there was absolutely no need. Pick your best team it’s that simple, and if you can’t do that it’s maybe time to change.
TNT are a disgrace.
Pep has become the antithesis of what he was when he first joined. I used to be gobsmacked at the teams he put out in some fixtures (in a positive way) as I thought it was massive overkill. Now, it seems as every game is just rolling a couple of dice to see which numbers come out.

I said just before halftime haaland needs to be subbed, when we try play through him
We hardly ever score all we do is cross from the wings and hope he’s on the end of it.
And for almost 18 months Bar a few games he’s nowhere to be seen.
Against Newcastle we had 3-4 players all trying to score and it works well.
I’m sick of seeing us play with 10 men when haaland starts we know he can get involved in other ways when he can be arsed but most of the time he’s not even trying to get on the end of anything. I honestly couldn’t care less if he’s sold he can’t hide behind those two ridiculous goal tally’s any longer
Done fuckall for 18 months.
A lot of us got pelters for calling out savinho
Well you believers have seen tonight he’s just bang average and the less said about the smiling ghost the better. But most of all what the actual fuck is pep doing leaving out nunes Nico g and cherki ? If it wasn’t pep I’d say he’s trying to get himself sacked!!.
Only player who seemed to be committed regardless of effectiveness was Doku who at time had 3 fucking men on him, how can that happen? Rodri I’m afraid we’ve seen the best of him.
Suicidal tactics and formation whilst leaving our most productive players out.
Never thought I’d say this but thanks for all you’ve done pep but it’s time for new ideas
You’ve been found out just like our 500k a week striker.

It would be interesting to hear what Rodri and Bernardo thought of Pep’s bizarre lineup tonight. I’m sure both of them were gutted by the team’s performance. This wasn’t the time to experiment with a new system.

Everyone knows Doku and Savinho rarely work well together, so why go with that? And why drop our best-performing attacking right-back, who, by the way, isn’t slow getting back?

Madrid were there for the taking with so many big players missing, and now it looks like we could be out before we even get to play the home leg.

Our best chance came from Nico O’Reilly tackling someone…

Think of the players we had on the pitch and that’s the best we can come up with?

Reality check. Poor Madrid team and we got dominated. Lucky it was only 3-0.

The setup was horrendous and the players performances even worse.

Need an absolute miracle now at the Etihad now. Need a repeat of that 4-0 with a much inferior side...

If City win & qualify, ban me for life

Our problems this season are highlighted by our lack of technical ability.
You only have to see our set pieces and corners to see our players just fall short.
We've obviously been spoilt rotten with David Silva and Kevin decade.CTID

The background to this game, with the ramping that this was the worst Madrid team in ages didn't help. They were always going to be up for this.

As for the team, we can question performances, a couple of players out of position. I thought in the final third we looked directionless, no incision. 10 corners to Madrids 1, and we failed to best the first man a few times

Phil McNulty has produced a piece on how poor the English clubs have performed in the CL this week. I think some of this performance can be attributed to burn out, the extra CL games, and the English league being more physical. Madrid/PSG get their league games shifted, or played a night or two before.

Not looking for excuses but the squad is not as poor as some think. Fingers crossed Pep can get the tactics spot on for the 2nd leg

Every corner, corner kicker (be it Foden, Bernardo or whoever) sticks up 8 fingers and two thumbs. What does that mean every single time and do the opposition know what it means? It is a futile gesture. And then the ball doesn't even get over the first man.

We've been poor at set pieces for years, and it's hardly any better now .....

Winning by three goals (3-0 or 4-1) and going to extra time isn't out of the question, but for that to happen, we'll need to field the right starting eleven and play a near-perfect match.

Yesterday, we handed them an easy victory on a silver platter; even Getafe and Benfica gave them more trouble... No matter which team gets through, they'll get thrashed by a tennis-like scoreline against Bayern.

Doesn't always work that way ..... Real Madrid seem to live for this competition, they seem to rise to it, and they have a knack of producing performances and results when they need to .... Bayern look good, but backing them against Real Madrid and their outstanding record in this competition is risky.

Nobody even looks let alone tries to play him in any more. No balls on the deck for him to run onto. Ever.

He gets annoyed that he's not being looked for. He switches off and gets moody. After a while he doesn't make the run because, well, what's the point. And then he's got three defenders all giving him a dig.

Pep said last week, words to the effect of "if you've got Messi you don't sling crosses in, if you've got Haaland you do, because he'll score from them", now where were all those crosses tonight?

We don't play to his strengths, we actually play to his weaknesses, and then people moan that they're disappointed in "him".

Just my take on it.
It’s almost as if pep decided to bench our 2 full backs who can actually cross a decent ball.

Most disappointing thing is under normal circumstances you could say oh well we'll learn from that, but we won't. Its not a new issue throwing a ridiculous team on. This over reliance on Bernie in the middle isn't new, the hit and miss of Sav isn't new, the LB and RB issues are not new. Throwing all these issues on at once is again unfortunately not new.

Madrid absolutely packed the middle of the park, especially when we went forward, reminded me of a boxer controlling the ring, win the ball and exploit the massive gaps, we were not only out played we were massively out coached.

Our fan base has become a joke even the oldies are clueless. 12 new players in 18 months they expect it to just work.

People need to wake the fuck up they probably all slagged the rags off for the same thing.

Pathetic.
It didn't work last night because of another CL brain fart by Pep, the formation he decided on, and his team tactics, not because of 12 new players.

Bar our last result against Forest at home, which was disappointing and frustrating, it's been working in the PL as we were 5 points behind Arsenal with a game in hand. We're in the Carabao Cup final. And the last 8 of the FA Cup. And the last 16 of the CL. We are still in contention for 4 trophies, just about.

Last night was all about Pep's formation, tactics, and the players not performing on the night, not about 12 new players, most who have trained and played together for the best part of this season, bar the January signings.

I think we have to start questioning the contributions of the backroom staff Kolo Toure, Pep Lijnders and especially James French. I'm seeing no improvement in our defence, build up or set-pieces. The latter verge on the comical and are more dangerous to us than the opposition. There is no excuse for that.

I've watched almost all their matches, whether in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, or the Champions League, and I can confirm that they've been outplayed by every team. This was their second-best match, along with the one against Barça at the start of the season, who played with a suicidal high line. This is their worst season in a decade. We practically gifted them the victory. I'm willing to bet you anything they'll concede at least six goals in the two legs against Bayern.

Everyone saw the Newcastle game and then the Madrid game. This Jekyll and Hyde performance is what giving me jitters all day long. A great team doesn't give a great performance one day and shit other day.
These are meant for clubs like Fulham or Newcastle and unironically Rags or Chelsea. And these performances don't get trophies either. Maybe a cup here and there. Also that leads to questions about Pep too.

So I dont know what happens in the london stadium. We are fully capable of a 4-0 win or a 1-0 drubbing. Difficult to predict which!

…set-pieces. The latter verge on the comical and are more dangerous to us than the opposition.
I’ve said numerous times that when we get a throw-in, most times it would be better to commit a foul throw or just give the throw to the opposition, because they always seem to leave us vulnerable on the turnover.

And, lastly, FFS could we stop being Johnny Come Lately “crowd the keeper” on corners, because, esp in Europe, we get nothing out of them except a foul against us…even when we are being rugby tackled!

Tonight we at least tried a variation set piece, but Semenyo slipped and fucked it up!
