Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

The worst kept secret at the club is that Phil has a medical issue. Healthy Phil takes the ball on the half turn with two or three marking him and surges towards the goal and strikes a shot - either a good save or a goal results. At the moment, he receives the ball, doesn't turn then lays it off - a five/ten yard pass. If this rumour is as solid as many believe, why is there never any mention that he's playing with a medical condition? The silence just sets the rumour mill in motion.

I think it all depends on the team Pep picks.

True, but we need to take risks anyway.

Something like this:

3 in defence: Nunes, Khusa, Guehi

RAN: a wingback, supporting Doku and delivering crosses, he's good in small spaces, which would be useful if/when Real defend deep

Rodri and O'Reilly in CM, with O'Reilly joining attacks

Cherki at 10

Attack: Semenyo, Haaland and Doku

If deflections and bounces go our way, anything is possible. But in any case, we need chance creating players because having finishers like Haaland and Semenyo without creators is futile.

That sounds convincing but we barely laid a glove on them in the 1st leg.

Last night at 0-0 we got a corner. It was a great set piece that we’d clearly worked on. Semenyo took up position far edge of the area, the corner was played along the floor into space for Semenyo to run onto and smack it unchallenged into the goal… if only Semenyo hadn’t slipped as he approached the ball! Why do so many of our players slip? I used to put Rugby studs in my boots (longer)
Last night, our players were slipping like they were playing on ice.

If that’s true why are we playing him?

I’m probably not as negative as some others. I didn’t think Pep’s line-up was that strange (apart from O’Reilly at left-back), and the tactic of using two wingers 1v1, runners in behind and players in the pockets around the box with Rodri and Bernardo controlling the structure didn’t seem that crazy either, given the Real side we were facing.

We got into the final third plenty and had enough chances to score in the first 20 minutes. Then they score two goals through a mix of brainfarts, bad luck, and a player having the game of his life, before sealing it with one of the best goals we’ll see this season.

In the second half they just had to defend and didn’t give us any space. The line between genius and idiot is sometimes very thin in football — if we’d taken two of those chances in the first 20 minutes and gone on to win the game, Pep would probably be getting praised as a tactical mastermind today.

Plenty of the posters slagging us off never post when we win mate..
When people post on whether we win or not that's good.. But posting only when we lose is odd behavior in my opinion
Good point blue, I tend to read / post less in the immediate aftermath of games like this - so much negativity when even a game like last night is based on fairly small margins.

We actually started well and it was frustrating that 2 or 3 balls across the face of the goal had no takers. I know we got a break with the penalty but the Nico chance was huge - 3-1 down and the mood would be more optimistic.

I just want us to dust ourselves off and get back on the horse on Saturday.

Hopefully Pep has learned more from last night and finds a way to achieve a better balance between attack and defence.

A good performance and result Saturday will see the optimism levels rise on here.

Was laughed at on this forum when i said Dias/Guehi are the same player and would be an awful pairing.

They’re not the same player at all but they are an awful pairing.

Guehi is miles better on the ball and faster to the point where he’s a totally different player. However he’s not quite Khusanov bail-Dias-out-every-time fast an he’s not experienced at this level.

City win well at Newcastle nobody say anything to me City get beaten at Madrid they are all over me like a fkn rash strange that

Not really its madness all the time especially when losing, so it is somewhat strange you would enter with that knowledge then leave because of it.

Try to apply basic logic to your actions in future :-)
Let's not use the word logic when it's clear you've little experience with the literal meaning.

-I am usually in the match thread.

-I am aware and have stated that the match threads have been increasingly negative prior to yesterday.

-Yesterday's match thread was more negtive than usual.

~It is not at all "somewhat strange" that I would enter with that knowledge especially given the fact that it looked on paper like a match that City may have done well in thereby potentially diminishing some of the usual suspects negativity.

~It also makes logical sense that I would choose to leave.

I won't apologize for not feeling obliged to subject myself to the negativity.

As it refers to the application of basic logic to my future actons - my rationale indicates an intent or at least a perculating hypothesis as to my likely choice relative to matchday threads.

In the least it will temper future responses as I realize there's little hope for the willfully and perpetually miserable: especially those with whom an attenuation of intellect is required to effectively communicate.
