Lords back Walney proposal for new protest group category after Palestine Action ban row

Move by crossbench peer would designate 'extreme criminal protest groups' (ECPGs) under the Crime and Policing Bill.

The House of Lords has backed a proposal to create a new legal category for violent protest groups, allowing them to be banned without labelling their supporters as terrorists

The amendment, introduced by independent crossbencher and former Labour MP Lord Walney, would designate certain organisations as “extreme criminal protest groups” (ECPGs) under the Crime and Policing Bill.

As he introduced the measure, Lord Walney called the government’s decision to ban Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000 “divisive and controversial.”

He added: “The sight of people being arrested and charged for holding up signs is uncomfortable.”

Walney described his proposal as “an appropriately limited measure that can make a significant difference while completely preserving the right to protest and freedom of expression and association.”

He acknowledged, “There are a range of views in this House and of course in the country over the proscription of Palestine Action

Former Metropolitan Police Chief Lord Hogan-Howe described the amendment as “narrowly defined,” focused on intent to cause serious harm or influence public policy.

He urged ministers to consider the measure or something similar to address gaps in current law.

Home Office minister Lord Hanson opposed the proposal, arguing that existing legislation is sufficient to deal with criminal protest groups and warning that a parallel regime to terrorism laws is unnecessary and could threaten free speech and association.

Despite government objections, the Lords passed the amendment by 200 votes to 162

“The government to ban the Pro Iranian marches in the UK from tomorrow for a month”

Bizarre comment.

“Aladwan, 31, pleaded not guilty to inciting support for proscribed group Hamas, and publishing material intending to stir up racial hatred after posting about Gaza and October 7 on social media site X.

She will appear at the Old Bailey in London on April 24. She was hailed as a “hero” outside the court by supporters”

State level harassment ?

I'd say it's a bit of a risk for the state to take this to a jury. Can they find 12 people of whom at least 10 think Israel is beyond criticism? One charge seems to be posting a picture of a bulldozer and the message Glory to the Palestinian Resistance.

If that photo was in the Trump thread and it was ICE officers there would be uproar.

This is England 2025.
I was just thinking the same thing.

The far Right use the trope of being arrested for saying hurty words on social media as a way to promote their cause. As it's allegedly happening to Palestine protestors there's fuck all about it.

Yeah...

No number on their shoulders either.

Is this legit?
AI apparently. Wasn't wearing a mask at the time.

EDIT: Might be wrong there actually. think some people on x have generated an image of the officer's face without the mask using AI.

After your reply to me I was just about to recheck the photo to see if their numbers were on display.
It is a disciplinary offence not to have the numbers on show. All officers must be identifiable. (It's not a criminal offence)

This country is in great danger of lurching to the very far right. I dont mean Conservative, I mean wayyyyyyyy over there.

I agree.

We're living in worrying times.

The photo is legit, but you can see the green mask man is wearing numbers in better quality versions and the one in a jacket has ID around his neck.

Thats pretty shocking.

If the crimes they commit constitute terrorist activities then the jury should be able to make that decision. With all the facts at hand.

The government, the courts, the media all come out of this looking awful.

Does it really suprise you regarding government's and how corrupt they are. The money they must be burning through to try and prove some point.

The circumventing of laws and rights is probably the most scary aspect of this country's decline. But dont worry, the advent of AI will only crank it up. Wait till your entire work/online/personal/medical/financial life is analysed, packaged and used against you to quell descent via threat and blackmail. The next election will be the last chance. Work out who isn't in the owned uniparty (aka The Single Transferable Party) vote for them even if you have to hold your nose and pray they themselves dont get nobbled. The tech we all worship is just about to imprison us. This would never happen? Well, one ex member of parliament and his family is presently living in excile due to misuse of powers via a particularly orwellian law/act of parliament...and who would of thought trial by jury would be cancelled?

Couldn’t find an appropriate thread and being a noob am unable to create a new one...

Anyway enough moaning, this is in a similar vein to the right of Palestinian people. This Saturday those nobs from Britain First will be attempting to stoke their particular weird brand of thuggish division and so - as always - they will be resisted and will be seen off.

Don’t jump on me but the theme is ‘A City United’ again so all blues are encouraged to wear their colours (and obvs the other lot are too so we can drop our rivalry for day at least).

Worrying times indeed: the activists being charged again as a terrorist,
has several consequences on the evidence they can present to the Jury.

“Max Blumenthal just exposed a shocking corruption of the British justice system. Six activists from Palestine Action went back to court after being acquitted in February. They had already served in prison, staged a hunger strike, and one attempted suicide under extremely harsh conditions. Now they face potential terrorist sentences.

But here's the kicker: the jury is not allowed to know about the "terrorist" designation. They're being led to believe they're ruling on simple criminal charges. If they convict, a biased judge — a former barrister for MI6 and the Metropolitan Police — can then sentence them as terrorists

The UK has become a police state for Israel”

Havent been following this thread so if its been discussed before sorry.

I dont understand how its illegal to show support for Palestine. Palestinians are being murdered by Israel every single day. Israel are trying to wipe Palestine of the map. Israel are committing war crimes.

It's ok to support a murdering country like Israel but against the law to show support fir the victims.

Or have I got this wrong ?

You've got it wrong.
If your sign says Support Palestine you do not commit and offence.
If you add Action on the end, it is deemed as supporting (and encouraging support for) a prescribed organisation which is illegal.
