We went into the Madrid home game 0-3 down and then lost 1-2. Whichever way you cut it we were horrendous in that away leg and we were still miles away in the home game. We were actually miles better before Christmas and haven't quite found our feet since then.
The thing is we are where we are because Arsenal have gone through some bad form too. The title will just be decided by whether we can equal them or better. We haven't really done that consistently this season so I still think it's Arsenal's to lose and the pressure is all on them because they've been top all season. It's theirs to throw away.
It'll be crazy if it goes down to GD on the last day.
I'm not sure in which alternate universe we were "miles better before Christmas", because we started December by almost blowing a 4-1 lead at Fulham, and started the New Year with three draws. Other December results were OK but performances were not eye opening.
Compare that with recent form - beat Arsenal relatively easily in the Carabau final after blowing Newcastle away in the semis, followed that up by putting 4 past Liverpool in the FA Cup and it would have been more if we hadn't (correctly) chosen to ease off, then scored another 3 at Chelsea, all without conceding a single goal then won the must win v Arsenal. That's spectacular form by any standards.
Sure, the Madrid matches were a disappointment but sometimes you have to acknowledge how good they were in the first leg, against a young team with injuries that are still rebuilding. Nobody on this forum expected us to win the CL and actually dropping out when we did was probably a blessing in disguise anyway because it's allowed us to go on this run with no Euro match pressure.
As far as I'm concerned this is a team that has widely been acknowledged as being in a rebuilding process this season yet here we are, Carabau cup winners, semis of the FA Cup and hot favourites to make the final at least, and with a real chance of the title. That's an incredible achievement to date all things considered, even if we don't win anything else. Compare our season with that of Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and depending how it ends, even Arsenal. Not one person, fan, pundit or anybody else expected us to be where we are right now. It's just a shame that a proportion of our fans don't seem to recognise it.
