Pep to leave at the end of the season

What if Maresca has indeed reached an agreement with CFG but for Girona since Michel’s contract is up in the summer. If he does well enough and exceeds expectations, he comes in after Pep’s contract ends next season, or if Pep extends he simply stays there until another big opportunity. Just food for thought.

Easy to assume he only wants a CL club but he has not warranted the level of an elite manager’s label that should be taking charge of City post-Pep.
If that were the case, imo he would be looking for other opportunities.

Which, if you believe the reports re Napoli and Fenerbache talks, he is.

Yes, I noticed this and I agree with you.

I think the lure of building another young team will prove too tempting for him.
My thoughts exactly.

None of us know how Pep feels. But at the end of the day he’s obsessed with the game and I think the opportunity to coach the next gen with the likes of NOR, Cherki, Khusanov just to name a few is too tempting.

I have said this previously. If no news or announcements come out soon, at what point do we accept he is staying?

Realistically, well they would have already announced something like that by now. But if not for whatever reason, the only real chance at it without potentially derailing a good chance at a treble or then handing it in a way that is less than worthy of its magnitude, would imo be either immediately after the FA cup final, ahead of the last game vs villa, or within a week after the last game.
Can’t see them announcing after AV. Surely the greatest manager the club has ever had would want to say a proper goodbye to the fans. Any announcement before these final games would be disruptive in the extreme. I think he is staying.

In Pep’s interview yesterday he was discussing how he’s enjoying the team’s progress with the new players and possible new signings and casually slipped in ‘ my plans for next season’ A hint with clogs on perhaps?

He will have received a pay off from Chelsea which means he doesnt have to rush however, generally in the terms of the pay off will be an obligation to seek employment but that wont be enforced for some time

Exactly:
To prevent any derailment of the season there is only one possible scenario, if post the cup final we have lost any chance of the championship. Immediately after the Villa game would either put dampers on winning the league or make the mood even worse and also take off the celebration of the City careers of Bernie and John who deserve their send-off
I dont think there is a good opportunity before the week following the end of the season

Reading between the lines a bit, seems to be that Viana has made a contingency plan because there's a chance Pep could leave. That plan is Maresca. But so far it's not been activated which means that Pep hasn't made a decision.
Surely though we will know his decision by now, I just can’t believe that won’t be the case.

Methinks the club has ‘leaked’ the news of Pep’s imminent departure to a select person/small group internally in order to smoke out a leaker(s).

I know nothing but I know this. Pep Guardiola has been steadfast his entire career. He.does.not.break.contracts. He will be here next season, 100% guaranteed. Indeed I wouldn’t rule out a further two years extension at some point in the next 6-12 months being announced. Out of the blue.

There will be a lot of egg on a fair few faces when the season begins in August and the bald genius is still on the touchline. They will spin it as “he wanted to go out as a title winner” if we do not won this season, or “He wanted to defend his title with his new team” if (when) we do it this season. Either way he WILL be here next season.
Lots of rumours, and links were posted the other day, where it said Pep’s new contract was a 1+1 rather than a strictly 2 year deal, consequently it may well be the case that he’s not breaking his contract by leaving this summer, we can’t be sure.

Perhaps Maresca will join the coaching staff during the summer, see how he works with Lynders , do some of the tactics, get to know the players and if everything is going well Pep can gradually step back knowing everything is working fine.

Maybe that would be less risky than bringing someone new in and letting him loose what we have a good culture and system already?

Seems unlikely that he’d leave the club hanging, but plausible that he’s told them of his intention to step down at the end of the season and the club have left the door open for him. Maresca is the contingency but if Pep has a change of heart then that’s that. Hopefully Khaldoon is working on persuading him!

I think when we can no longer win the league it will be announced if he is indeed leaving. So by that logic could be after tonight’s game, there’s no reason to keep it a secret if it’s a decision the club thinks would affect the players last few games.
So if we do lose or draw tonight ?
Or this is a load of bollox, hope so

Whatever happens tonight, we absolutely could still win the league.

Unless he has specified that he is leaving, the default Has to be that he is staying. For either the club hierarchy, or us fans. Not a chance he leaves it hanging till a world cup summer and then just decides he is off, not after these 10 years. And if he had, it would have been bigger news imo.

As a side, which other manager under contract gets this type of assumption that he would just leave, and the speculation that follows. That isn't in sackable form, obviously. Not just once, but a number of times over the decade, and we readily forget all the times it was wrong.

Think Maresca is a bit of a romantics choice. 'Knows' the club, worked eith Pep (briefly), untested and not sought after by the biggest clubs, could be an unearthed gem etc etc.

This club sold Palmer. McAtee. Numerous other academy players. Sent a 100m player out on loan. Sacked Mancini. When has romance ever been key to the decision making?
