The Labour Government

4.5% Liz .... another campaign ran by McSweeney ... on behalf of Petie.

Good to see them getting kicking by those that they kicked via their control freakery.

In 2023, the Labour Party blocked Jamie Driscoll standing the Labour candidate for North of Tyne mayor, getting factional revenge for Labour Together associate Nick Forbes, who Driscoll beat in 2019 on Momentum ticket to be selected as the Labour candidate for Mayor (which he then won). Driscoll was blocked in 2023 after sharing a stage with renowned socialist film maker, Ken Loach.Today Driscoll won his seat in Monument for the Greens and will likely play a key role in negotiating who will run Newcastle, most likely in a Green/Liberal Dem Coalition. All 78 Newcastle Council seats up for grab. So far 61 have been called. The Labour Party HAS NOT WON A SINGLE SEAT. This is where we see, most starkly, the results of the Labour Together project.

Had the pleasure of meeting Jamie Driscoll. He spoke at My union conference when mayor and openly said he expected to booted out of the party. When I saw this result the first thing that sprang to mind was the locals who overwhelmingly supported him voted a massive fuck you in solidarity.

And those of restricted thinking who imagine more left wing politics will fix this need to give their heads a rattle.

The fact is in our country, too many people are not working, taxes are too high. Until any party gets to grips with that, we remain fucked. It's no good trying to divert the discussion onto billionaires or PPE. We need to get half the country off its arse.

We’ve ended up with Reform in charge of the council after decades of Labour control I’m shocked to say the least.

We don’t have an immigration problem in this town so it’s not that, I think it’s because of the green belt issue where the new terminal from Manchester is being relocated here. I’ve got no idea why anyone would vote reform.

Sorry to disagree mate, not sure how long you have lived in St Helens but it did have one of the lowest % of non whites in the country living in the borough a few years back, which I was told by an acquaintance that whitehall were aware of & wanted to rectify, hence over the past few years a large influx of asylum seekers who were kept in a number of hotels ( Merseyside was regarded as an area for asylum seeker placements) . I was told this a couple of years back via someone who worked on the placement of asylum seekers. This together with an influx of non white workers from the African continent who work in the care sector (home visits etc) & other non whites who work at the units along the M62 around Burtonwood , Amazon etc & this has noticeably increased the presence of non whites in the town certainly from when I was a lad. Ironically the majority of them are working but its the asylum seekers in the hotels which has caused the back lash see facebook videos at Carr Mill dam & the Ibis ? at Haydock, My Mum god bless her used to say you could put a dog up with a red rosette & it would be voted in in St Helens-- apparently not anymore
TBF there are other issues including salaries of the top people within the council, plus imo a lethargy of not having any serious opposition & also a severe lack of central funding as well which has not helped labour
TBH i was surprised at the candidates for reform in my area as not who I thought would represent them as Ive known a couple of them for 50 years !!

Kind of overlooked that his name was also dragged through the mud in the midst of the 'your party' nonsense.

One of the rare positive outcomes amidst the predictable gloom.

Aside from the krav maga ghoul shedding real tears rather than the fake ones she shed for panorama back in the day ....

Who do Labour actually represent now?

The working class/ traditional heartlands aren’t voting for them. The suburban middle classes aren’t and the city centres seems to be leaning more towards the greens.

Feels like they are having abut of an identity crisis
Thank god they can rely on the Welsh like they have for a century :-)

We moved here about seven years ago from Manchester and in comparison we don’t have an immigration problem in St Helens I didn’t even know there was an hotel in the neighbourhood.

Immigration must be the reason as Labour lost the council to Reform. We live near Sherdley Park so rarely pass through Burtonwood.

You’re probably seeing it as it is, and it’s more a perceived issue due to national coverage.

It’s understandable that people worry about these issues, they are being influenced by it on every corner.

Do you know how this post comes across ?

Think about it for a second your basically saying Whitehall wants to replace white people for some reason. That’s not dissimilar to the anti semitic tropes. The government / Whitehall doesn’t care about race. A few years ago so conservative ? That well known foreign loving group you know headed by people like Robert Jenrick, Priti Patel, Suella, Theresa May, Boris letterbox Johnson Enoch Powel, Steve Baker, Rupert Lowe even Farage at one point o and White supremists Churchill.

You post talks about people working in care and warehousing so what’s the issue ?

O and why keep mentioning the fact they are not white ?

I’ve got no idea why anyone would vote reform.

If people aren't able to critically think.. they look to inflict pain on others and are willing to take on pain themselves.

Quite often you can make further headaway with an enemy that's more myth than real.

And the beatings will continue till morale improves!

I was fairly optimistic today and now I don’t know.

I was listening to people on phone in shows etc and seeing comments on here and I was thinking you know what I think we can see a turn around.

For the following reasons

We might get electoral reform the left could unite.

Nobody else is popular

Nobody seems to know why they voted reform other than let’s hope.

The main issue is the cost of living which Labour have actually done well on. Free Breakfast clubs, two child cap, Energy Price cap coming down due to energy tax changes and now decoupling from gas I think is on the cards, rising minimum wage / living wage, job guarantee.

Farage is claiming they run good councils, mine seem to be filling in more potholes and they claim to have saved money across the board but Kent’s a basket case along with a few others.

It’s not been as bad as feared.

We might get closer to the EU

Farage being close to Trump cannot be helping him anymore.

The 5 million

However I not so sure after listening to people not really have a reason for voting for Farage I now think we get what we deserve and logic and policy is pointless

They do have a reason, or to be precise they have an emotional reason. It’s predominantly immigration. We know this because this is what Farage offers, indeed it’s the only thing he offers and if you vote for what he offers then that is your reason for doing so.

Everything else they say is just noise.

Pissing into the wind on here with that post. Half will say it didn't happen, and the other half will say that they're glad it happened.

Tin helmet on here we go there is no such as child poverty in this county just bad parenting the amount of money a single parent with two kids is the same amount as I take home plus child benefit plus free school meals plus food vouchers when on school holidays when you take out my travel costs 36 miles a day for work they are better off than I am by a mile

I listened to them and they just want change for change sake. They are just unhappy.

A few where actually really talking about cost of living which Labour can better deal with.

A few talked absolute nonsense. Accusing Labour of lie about things they didn’t lie about or not listening but mentioning things that Labour listened to them on by U turning or mentioned things that didn’t make sense or weren’t true.

Or, you know, you can just drive through parts of any major city and see it for yourself.

Change for change sake is not a rationale. They are adults not children.

Cost of living is an issue, but a party that wants to cut public services, the NHS and are big fans of Truss economics isn’t going to help in this regard. We have seen the Reform economic model in action before. It didn’t end well.

Them talking nonsense you can’t do anything about. Divert the conversation to vaccines, 5g masts or the moon landings and walk away. Zero point in engaging with them.

Quite dismissive, mate, as if I live in a cave.

I’m currently working with a huge diverse community of productive people who bring so much to the UK, economically and socially.

So, what you are saying is that I have to take the impact of these people just on the colour of their skin, rather than the person that they are.

Not the way I think, thank you very much.
