We nee to substitute "bias" for "corruption". This season there has been a clear bias on behalf of Arsenal and talk of corruption makes ti more and more difficult to prove. What seems impossible to deny is that - if Arsenal do win the title - they will be the worst champions certainly of the PL age because they will have won the title by the systematic subverting of those rules which make football such an enjoyable game. What element of cheating have they not exploited to the full? They waste time, feign injury and commit every offence imaginable in both penalty areas. If the opponent escapes from their own area after an Arsenal corner a gooner will suffer a head injury and play dead or a tactical foul - "one for the team" - will halt any chance of a counter attack. These tactics are used so regularly that they amount to a system of play which should be known as "the Arteta way" or, more appropriately, as "los bastardos football".
The question of corruption comes in simply because officials, the referees and VAR, have no wish to do anything to deter this approach. Arsenal have not conceded a penalty this season, no Arsenal player has been sent off in the PL this season. That is a remarkable record for the most physical team in the division. And we've heard Gary Neville asking why the goal which won Arsenal's opening match at OT was not even referred to VAR when it resulted from an apparently clear foul on the 'keeper by Saliba. Contrast that with the frantic surrounding of the referee yesterday.
It seems that at the very least Arsenal benefit from a unique generosity from officialdom. And this seems to extend to their manager who is allowed to prance about way out of his technical area and has licence to say more or less what he pleases.
But don't hold you breath in the hope something will be done about it.
