Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1998 - (page 271)

For my 2nd pick I'm going North of the border for a bit of Big Star style indie.

One of the original Creation signings they were onto their sixth album here and it got to number 3 in the album chart.

Never really moved from the formula too much but a band who always make me smile and believe summer is on its way.

From the album Songs From Northern Britain

Teenage Fanclub - Ain't That Enough

Trevor Rabin departed and the band continued to confuse its fans by releasing two albums in the year.
Keys to Ascension two which was composed of live and new studio material from the classic line up.
A new studio album was also released with Billy Sherwood and Igor Khorosev replacing Wakeman.
Here is the title track of the latter much in the vein of the Rabin era.
Open your Eyes -Yes

A very blurry year for me with most of it spent raving down on the South coast. I'll spare you all the pleasure of having to listen to 3 house or trance bangers but that's mainly down to me not remembering the details..

Echo and the Bunnymen - Nothing ever lasts forever
The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
Foo Fighters- Monkey Wrench

Probably the biggest German metal band since the Scorpions, Rammstein released their second album Sehnsucht in '97. It features one of their most well-known songs Du hast.
It's the only German language album to sell a million copies in the US.

The cover art featured all six members with facial mutilations and interestingly was created by the same artist who did the cover for the Scorpions Blackout album released 15 years earlier, which it somewhat resembles.

Keys 1 was in 1996, and I was half tempted to put "That, That Is" up for nomination, but it violated Rob's 9 minute threshold times 2, so I thought better of it. Keys 2 would be "Mind Drive", but I probably have 4 others in 1997.

Nice shout out.

By this year, my younger brother who had enjoyed most of my music while we were growing up, was now influencing me with some of the bands he was into listening to while in college.

This track is my favourite track off of Creed's debut album. The lyrics challenge the tendency to divide people by race or political background, urging people to move past "discrimination on both sides" and recognize that humanity's ultimate fate is shared.

The world is headed for mutiny
When all we want is unity
We may rise and fall
But in the end, we'll meet our fate again
One, oh, one, the only way is one

"One" - Creed

Blur: Song2
Hanson: Mmmbop
Foo Fighters: Everlong
Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven
(from BBC Sessions album - think it might have been a recording of the first public performance of the song)
I think I got the right version of Stairway but please let me know if I haven't

World full of music to go at. More than one poster will be fucked if rush, kiss or toads wet bastard sprocket haven't released anything...
Ask and thou shall receive...

Like a cheeky Semenyo goal, something had to do it today.

What is this ice that gathers 'round my heart?
To stop the flood of warmth before it even starts
It would make me blind to what I thought would always be
The only constant in the world for me

"Dam Would Break" - Toads Wet Bastard Sprocket

One nominator I and I know others miss here and on Blue Moon is @BimboBob. Thinking about him and hoping he is well. I know he'd want something from this release, and so to channel his nomination from the Playlist thread a few years ago...

And I thank you for bringing me here
For showing me home, for singing these tears
Finally, I've found that I belong here

"Home" - Depeche Mode

Primary songwriter Martin Gore takes the lead vocals here in a rare instance in a sobering song for him to get help and seek treatment for alcoholism during a dark time for him and the band.

I'm not going to bore anyone with a list of potential last picks for me but personally I thought 97 was a good year with some decent debuts from bands I have grown to love.

So for my last pick it's a somewhat poignant as the song is about a huge influence in Indian music and cinema who passed away last month at the age of 92.

Cornershop ironically named by Tjinder Singh as a nod to people who think all Asian families own a cornershop were on to their 3rd album in this year.
Although not my favourite that goes to Handcream For A Generation a few years later this did get them noticed.
An ode to the aforementioned Asha Boshle it became a huge hit due to Norman Cook speeding it up and adding his big beat but I would like and prefer the better album version to be put on please.

Cornershop - Brimful Of Asha

Tough to pick that final track. Lots of options for consideration, and not sure where to go on this.

Favourite song? It might be "Sonnet" off of The Verve's Urban Hymns, as I loved that track the first time I heard it.

But favourite album? We've already covered that on the Album Review Club thread with OK Computer and @mrbelfry rightfully got one of the best tracks there already. Plus, most here know that album. That release came out right after our UK trip in April of that year. The amount of Radiohead and other bands I heard there was always unique from the typical offerings in the US.

So I might as well go for one of the B-sides that didn't make the album...

Plastic bag, middle class
Polyethylene
Decaffeinate, unleaded
Keep all surfaces clean
If you don't believe this, sell your soul
If you don't get into it, no one will

"Polyethylene (Parts 1 & 2)" - Radiohead

Will Oldham - O Let It Be
Bentley Rhythm Ace - Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out
Lou Reed/BBC/Various - Perfect Day
Buena Vista Social Club - Chan Chan
