14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

its very hard to judge anyone on today's performance-but its just too many touches every time..

Was meh today. But who expects anything more than meh when he hasn't been included in matchday squads. He'll leave regardless

I thought he was awful today. Notwithstanding that the game had nothing riding on it surely to fuck you have your own personal performance standards. Our central midfield was wide open in the second half. He looked the happiest man in the ground immediately after the match. Don’t think he and a few others get what it is to be part of an elite squad. Maresca should be brutal when he comes in. Sounds harsh. It probably is. Hard day.

Probably won't be here next season which is a shame but understandable.

On the whole 6 vs 8 thing, I actually think Pep was right and I had said this before Nico G kicked a ball for us.

He does not have the grace, agility, movement to play as an 8 between the lines like we have seen David, Bernie or Gundogan do for us.

In a possession based side, being a 6 is his best chance at the top level.

He is still young and can improve, but I think it won't be with us.

Got to go - nowhere near good enough today and he was playing v second string players who’d been on the pop.

Tbh I don’t see it as a shame if he’s not here next season. He just isn’t anywhere near good enough.

Feel for the lad. He will never be Rodri and must be difficult to get anywhere near that level. Currently as a footballer I would have him on par with Steven Hawkins if he was alive.

Watched the video of Gonzalez and Rodri eating together and chatting about their relative experiences. Lad still looked and sounded a tad overwhelmed, but he also struck me as someone who is staying and is expecting to develop. Rodri made an interesting observation about how the 6 under Guardiola has to be capable of playing 8 and even 10 as well, given how far back we press teams, so I think it would be unwise to discard Gonzalez so soon.

another £60m down the drain ?
Dont be like those on twitter and purposefully get fees wrong

He was £50m, and he contributed to us getting champions league last year and cup finals this year

Hes started around half of the available games in the league and most of the league Cup games

If we sell him, we'll probably recoup most of our outlay on him and his current book value is £33mil so likely make a "profit" off him on the books

Its not working out but lets not overdramatise it, get enough of that from other fanbases

Nunes was £53m towards the drain untill he turned it around and became our starting RB and one of the best in Europe

Never been up to the quality required here these days since the minute he walked in the door, could tell almost immediately.

Pep did sign a few duds during his time, this was deffo one of them.

Everyone will have a clean slate under a new manager to force their way into his thinking. You’ve got the likes of Gonzales, Marmoush. Reinjdeers, Ait Nouri that weren’t starting under Pep. Maresca may see something different in some of these players and they may respond differently with a new voice in the dressing room.

A lot of work to hit the ground running in preseason for the new manager to see who’s with him and wants to run through walls and who isn’t and needs shipping out.

I think the current squad has been assembled with the transition in mind. Maresca apparently does a great deal of painstaking research, watching endless tape and learning everything he can about players, so if he is the anointed one, then he will come having done a solid 6 months of homework.
