I don't think I've ever witnessed such hysteria from City supporters.

He's a good player but he isn't that good - we're looking like a bunch of fools, the club officials, the supporters, like a bunch of kids playing kiss chase. Believe me he ain't worth this effort. They don't want yo sell, let it go. Tell him stick around there for another year and we'll come back next season.

This lauding him as being a brilliant player is really pissing me off, he's good but nothing like as good as he's being portrayed on here. I seriously hope we tell Liverpool to sod off and turn our attentions elsewhere. When you get to spending circa £50m (which is where we're heading here), there are damn sight better players we could be chasing.

I don't remember Real Madrid being bothered about paying slightly over the odds for Rodriguez or Bale. Or Barca with Neymar. Or Utd with Di Maria. If we want to move forward and compete with the top clubs we have to spend a lot of cash. That's the long and short of it.
Good post.

But they are really good players, Sterling is nowhere near any of them and may never be. If you were talking about Reus or Pogba, fair enough, but Sterling?

HG comes at a price.

Who would you like to see come on for £5 outlay?

If he isn't that good, why would we wait around & then sign him ?

If he's good enough to sign, why are you worried what Sheikh Mansour decides to do with his money ? Does he care if you overspend on a toaster ?

well they would be more expensive than £50m so not entirely sure of the point you're making?
It will be interesting to see what we end up paying- if Liverpool get us to pay £50m then they have played this well. If we have to pay that we probably haven't done quite well as we may have hoped, but who cares. Why haggle over £5m for a player who will improve us, unless we genuinely believe it will dramatically damage our negotiating stance in future deals.

Won the European Golden Boy award last year, which is an extremely prestigious honour. Have a look at the list of most costly players who were bought at 23 and under. Aguero, Buffon, Rooney, Ferdinand, Neymar, Bale, etc. Apart from Andy Carroll (LOL), they've all been resounding successes. Much more than so than relative gamble of paying big money for slightly older players - see Kaka and Torres as prime examples.

It won't sit at all well to give in to those twats but you've got to weight that up against not getting one of our top targets (whether you personally rate him or not clearly the people who matter at the club do) and leaving a player who is desperately trying to get a move to us high and dry. I do think if we are going to pay the asking price for Sterling we may as well just say fuck it and do whatever it takes to get all our top targets in. Especially as it isn't my money.

True. If he says it's on then it is definitely on.
iirc he worked at the bridgewater and he used to see the players having their medicals. That's why his info was always 100% when he posted. As far as I know we now do the medicals at the new training ground so he is no longer privy to the same information. Also, Sterling will not have had a medical yet because nothing has been agreed.
He might have other sources and I've no doubt he's posting in good faith, he never bullshitted or came across as an attention seeker.
With this in mind I wouldn't be as confident in his info as I was on previous occasions.

I've thought that about the Sterling fee all along. I've thought we're being asked to pay £25m for the player and then £25m for his homegorwn tag...until yesterday when we seem to have got Delph for £8m.

Delph's last two seasons were both better than the season Sterling had last season.

Other than Bolton away, Chelsea away and City at home every time I watched Sterling he was bloody awful last season!

He's 20. That means he should have his best years in front of him. And many years.

I'd go for him regardless of his nationality. We'll get him for £40m I think, certainly a lot less than LFC were initially holding out for. Not sure that matters so much now when FFP is behind us? The main thing is getting in the players we want.

If you don't rate him that highly, fair enough, but name some realistic alternatives i.e top young players who are available. Sterling has only become available because of the incompetence of their management. I'd like Di Maria, but there's no way Utd would sell to us. Or Robben, but he's old.

John Jo Shelvy was on the shortlist for that a few years ago!

You can't compare the Delph situation though. His contract situation means his fee isn't really relevant to the discussion on home grown prices.

Well Coutinho was supposed to have been brilliant, & Sterling did pretty much everything better than him, over the course of the season.

I think people are being far too harsh because a 20 year old kid failed to drag a piss average, badly managed, Liverpool team, into the top 4.
