Howard Kendall

Not sure why he's still attracting so much opprobrium for going back to Everton. It wasn't like he moved for sinister or primarily financial reasons. The heart wants what the heart wants.

And it was a quarter of a century ago.

And he's just died.

Let it go ffs. All's well that ends well.

Is that going on the new badge?

Well said that man.

Can't deny that I was seriously pissed off when he left and he got a fair amount of abuse off me when we played them at Goodison for the first time since his departure and his first game back at Maine Road early the following season. After that, there was far less animosity towards him in subsequent meetings probably due to a combination of us getting it out of our system and Kendall not having anything like the expected positive impact upon returning to Everton.

I will add that I was totally gutted at the news of his resignation - it probably ranks in my top 5 worst moments as a City fan, only surpassed by relegations, etc. There was a real feeling that we were going places under him. In the space of 11 months he'd turned us from relegation candidates to outsiders for the title - I say outsiders because it's very unlikely that we would have won it in 90-91 if he'd stayed due to Arsenal losing only one game all season, but 91-92 would've been very interesting if Kendall had been at the helm.

Sadly, just as City's future seemed bright, Kendall walked out on the club to return to his first love Everton. Hate mail and cruel chants headed Kendall's way as supporters felt betrayed. Peter Swales was shocked and the atmosphere around Maine Road was particularly depressing. The new Everton manger even contemplated taking Peter Reid with him to Goodison but, wisely, decided against that move.

At Everton, Kendall struggled and was replaced by Mike Walker. He later managed Notts County, Sheffield United and even had a third spell at Goodison. Kendall should always be remembered as a great football manager, and a positive influence on City during 1989-90. As with McNeill in 1986, he was perhaps foolish to leave the Blues when he did as his City side probably would have evolved into a trophy winning team.

He probably fell for one of life's great seducers... nostalgia.
City weren't all that, and a return to Goodison was clearly too alluring. We were effectively the jilted 'rebound' lover, and Everton his true love. C'est la vie. It hurt at the time, but I doubt anybody would go back and change it, knowing what we now know.

I remember the day he left us. Just dropped someone off my cab at Maine Road when he came round the corner from Claremont Road driving fast with a determined look on his face. Read later Swales had refused him permission to speak to Everton. Shame he left, he was taking us in the right direction!

Can we leave alone any distasteful remarks about our former manager please.
He was a footballing great both as a player and a manager and should only be remembered as such.
RIP HK

Think I was at his last game in charge at Roker Park, a 1-0 win White goal?

My one and only visit to that ground and still remember how cold and wet it was that day.

Gutted he went, we definitely shaped up as a decent team under him.

It was 1-1 against Sunderland at Roker Park .

One of our greatest ever technical managers. Saved us and then got us to 5th. Reid repeated the feat and then it became clear that the Kendall effect was gone, and the the decade long decline began.

I remember the 1-1 away at Palace, last game of the season. It was a Blues Brothers fancy dress day. We were singing Blue Moon [when it was fairly new] and he came over to start conducting us, waving his arms about and smiling broadly.

Thanks for the memories. Good night and God Bless.

I remember his first game as manager for City. At Southampton, and typical City we turned a one up score line with a 2-1 defeat. I was stopping at the same Southampton hotel as the City players, and hung around the hotel entrance all morning, was able to get a picture and autograph of Howard Kendall before they moved on to the Dell. I did have a word with Kendall and told him to make sure he sorted out our team. Events proved that was what he did. R.I.P Howard.
