Why So Blue?

It's about opinions, did you expect us to thump the current champions so easily, then to see how bad they have been since, did you think that of Chelsea ? Did you ?

Your a proper football guru if you thought they would be as bad as they have been this season, put it this way I bet it's only you who thought that,so whose the yes we were brigade ?

Did you expect a team knocked out in the 2nd round of the CL last year to be better than a treble winning side with a front 3 of Messi, Suarez and Neymar? Really??!

I'm not trying to censor anyone's right to discuss or analyse the performance. But there seems to be an awful lot of hysteria surrounding what was in fact a huge win considering the result in Turin.

Oh the irony...

What with getting charged for booing, this thread and a cracking result last night the day just keeps on giving

What the fuck u on about your talking in fuckin riddles now, just let the thread lie,it was almost an hour gone before you raised the issue again, talking shite, but if you want to carry on I'll ask you again, did you think Chelsea would be as bad as they have been this season ?

We got the result and that's all that mattered.
Yes it is, and the rest is just a multitude of opinions about the game.

My biggest issue last night was our lack of tempo, right through the team (Navas excepted), we were slow to the ball, didn't close down at all, never mind quickly, until the last 10 minutes, and we had large hole in midfield, where we were outplayed for long periods. This IS common to european games, so whilst all defeats/bad performances are not the same, there are common factors.

Juve was because we didn't take our chances early on, could have beaten them easily if we had, I thought we played well in Germany, and deserved the win.

Sevilla are a decent team, and obviously the missing players is a factor, but we didn't play well, and a number of players were below par, but the result IS the most important thing, and its nice to see us winning games when we've played shit, rather than games like West Ham, where we played brilliantly and lost.

Tempo in the CL is a funny thing. I remember long before we started playing in the competition people talking about other English sides struggling to adapt to the SLOWER more considered tempo of the CL. For me the tempo is only an issue if you're literally not creating anything. I didn't really feel that was the case last night (especially in the first half).

With regards the midfield, frankly mate, it is what it is. As long as Toure is in the side there will be upsides and downsides and one of the down sides will be that it will be easy to run off the back of him. However as someone else has already pointed out, the problem last night wasn't the big hole in our midfield but lack of quality defending from our full backs. I didn't think Sevilla were particularly targeting our central midfield area or playing through it with great ease. It was when the ball went wide and they attacked our full backs that we looked nervous and disorganised. The offside trap which we normally employ to such good effect was all over the shop which most to my eyes almost entirely down to Zaba.

No, I asked you did you think Chelsea would be better than Barca this season. You admitting that Chelsea have been shite undermines your point that Sevilla beating Barca shouldn't matter because we beat Chelsea. Go back and read your own posts.

Spending some time reading this forum this morning I'm staggered by the negativity about last night. I realise that it wasn't our best performance but equally we won, and taking into account the result that Juve got, the win last night no matter how we got it is huge.

I keep reading that we should be worried about the rags as well. Why? What is it in their form that is much more impressive than ours? Which players have they got who are better than ours? Their manager a better manager than ours?

And all the hanging our own players out to dry, slagging off all and sundry for being shit/naive/not good enough. Some people on here seem intent to slag anything and everything off at every opportunity. Makes the forum a fucking terrible place.

You're missing the point and focusing purely on the outcome Billy.

Against both Sevilla and Gladbach we were very, very poor and had both teams taken even half of their chances we'd have been beaten by embarrassing scorelines.

Had we not been as lucky and been resoundingly beaten in both games the 'negativity' on here would be ethereal and you would be as depressed as the next person.

The pessimism is underpinned by a very clear failure to learn from the CL and to adapt to it's requirements.

We missed plenty against both sides as well tbf.

Indeed but that in itself supports my assertion -

"The pessimism is underpinned by a very clear failure to learn from the CL and to adapt to it's requirements".

We can not continue to fluff chances at this level. That is failure to learn and adapt.

Meh,
Aguero had the best strike rate in Europe at one point last season or the season before scoring with 1 in 6 shots. Messi had something like 1 in 11. Football teams will always miss chances, unless it's Juve and we're playing them in the CL.

I don't understand why english clubs have a different tempo for this competition, but its true, we all do it. We did create chances first half, but we didn't have any quality to take them, even our equaliser, whilst well made by Yaya, had a touch of fortune to it.

The midfield issue was eventually fixed by Fernando, but it took a long time, and you're right Sevilla didn't target us through the middle (though they did run straight through it a few times), they definitely targeted wide areas, and yes the fullbacks were the issue, often caught by the ball played over them/round them, pulling Fernandhino both sides to cover, and sometimes the CB's out as well, at times it looked Sevilla had more players than we did.

I agree about the offside trap, though I was blaming Otomendi, as he doesn't hold the line very well, but I guess you can blame them all for not implementing it correctly.

Right up to our winner the defence looked like it was only a moment away from a costly error.

We were shite and well and truly got away with that last night. Technically we look on a different level to all the sides we are playing in the Champions League. Ball control, passing etc. Nothing looks like it sticks and we can't work ourselves out of the gaps that these sides can get out.

I think from our fans the view is that we aren't learning from previous games or campaigns in the slightest

Be careful mate, anymore sense talking like that will find you alienated from Billy and his followers

Well now he didn't say "Sevilla are shit, play in a tinpot league and we should be beating them by 6" did he?

No, I'm not, I'm just saying it's folly to expect every chance or nearly every chance to go in, especially with top class keepers on the pitch at both ends. Look at the Bayern Arsenal game, or the Ireland Germany game.

The stats don't really back that up, we had plenty of chances in Germany, 25, but only 6 on target, but we just didn't take them, I thought we played OK in Germany. Last night 16 and 6, but I thought we were poor last night.

In all 3 CL games this season we've had more attempts than the other team, and more or equal on target, we need to take more of our chances.

Is poor finishing a tactical problem, a mindset problem, or just one of those things?
