I haven't gambled in years but I used to do it all the time. I have some friends who live in England who have a gambling problem and I'd like to help them but I don't know what it's like over there. It seems that gambling is pretty much everywhere (sports, horses and slot machines). But what if you have a problem? Is it possible to self-exclude from casinos or racetracks? Can you somehow ban yourself from betting on sports?

Any information would be welcome.

I was talking about this with the old man yesterday and we both know problem gamblers, including my dying grandad who was a bookies' runner in the thirties in Dukinfield.

FOBTs are one of the cruellest inventions inflicted on the poor in recent times.

Don't get it myself, however you can't put the telly on, or the radio, or the internet without a deluge of gambling adverts. There's also bookies all over Stockport Road in Levenshulme. I'm probably a bit surprised that there aren't more headlines about gambling addiction, but maybe people are just putting on very small bets and handling it well. A lad next to me at the match was checking his phone all game for his accumulators - he had 3 running, but only bet £1, which isn't going to break the bank.

I have to believe it's a big problem in England. But problem gamblers are great at keeping secrets and lying about their losses while making believe they've won much more than they actually have. Here in The US I've known two people who have actually robbed banks to either get money to gamble with or to pay gambling debts. I also know a woman in her late sixties who embezzled over $100,000 to gamble with to deal with the depression of her husband's death.

I've got the ad about lonely mature redheads in my local area running on this page at the moment, but there is often a Coral bookies ad banner at the top. You're right, gambling ads everywhere now

Correct... A lot of media ignore this severe issue in this country... Hmm, I wonder why?

Perhaps with a large amount of the immoral scum having advertising on their websites/newspapers/tv programming.

I don't gamble.
I have an older brother "luckily" and saw him waste away thousands betting on the football.
Taught me to avoid.

I raised an issue with dispatches, other journalists and so on years ago now about underage lads using their own debit cards to gamble online.
I had extensive evidence and what happened?

Fuck all.

It should be banned, any form of gambling. I saw my cousin lose his wife and kids because of it, he was a sound guy but blew all his earnings on his addiction. He came up to me loads of times crying his eyes out screaming "how do i stop". I told him to ring me every time he felt like doing it so I could stop him but that urge just made him do it anyway. Once you've got it it's hard to break out.
