I know this is a discussion that crops up a fair bit when we play away at West Ham and it gets moved to a 5.30pm kick-off but what's the best plan to get back to Euston for the 9pm train? The last time I did it on the train, about 15 years ago, Upton Park tube was horrendously busy after the match and we walked to Plaistow instead. However, I'm thinking East Ham tube would be a better bet - the away end is on the East Ham side of the ground and according to Google maps it's an 18 minute walk which is actually closer than Plaistow. Granted it's 2 stops further to Euston than Plaistow but the advantage is that you get on the tube before the Upton Park/Plaistow lot. Has anyone any experience of getting the tube from East Ham?

I've done both Plaistow & East Ham and I'd say the latter is easier. Having said that, we got lost trying to find Plaistow and fortunately a kind West Ham fan walked us there. Going from East Ham only adds a couple of minutes to the tube journey. Also it's probably quicker staying on and going to Euston Square rather than changing and going direct into Euston.

Cheers Col - it certainly seems the easiest of all the options so will run with that. They're every 10 minutes to Euston Square on the Hammersmith & City line and the journey takes just over 30 minutes so it should be easy enough as long as I don't get lost on the way ;)

I'm doing this. I'm sure i'll make the 9pm train.

Done it many times, though my station back is a few minutes closer than yours at Kings Cross. I always use East Ham Underground , though this time I am spoiling myself & staying over - travelling home the next morning.

East Ham is easier to find if you don't know the area. Take a right out of the ground and walk to the Barking Road. Left there and walk down to the high street (Denmark Arms as a landmark) and then left again until you find the tube station. Never a queue.

H&C if there's one coming in otherwise change at Mile End for the Central line and then Bank for the Northern line to Euston.

Looking at Google Maps, that's the easier route to follow but as time is at a premium I reckon I could shave a few minutes off that. It involves walking through some dodgy looking housing estates but here goes: Exit the away end onto Priory Road and almost directly opposite there's a cut through ginnel that leads onto Seymour Road. Turn right at the end of Seymour Rd onto Cleves Rd, take the next ginnel on the left which cuts through onto Parr Road, turn left at Parr Road and take the next right onto Cabot Way, turn left at the end of Cabot Way onto Aragon Road and take the next right which is Wakefield Street, Follow Wakefield Street all the way to the bottom and then turn left onto Ron Leighton Way. Follow RLW all the way until it meets up with the A117 (top of High St) and then BOOM! The station is just a bit further up on the right. 18 minutes walk according to Google Maps ;)

Planning to drive from t'Hull with my two lads. Never been before. Would those who have suggest parking outside London (maybe Watford) and tubing in or driving nearer to Upton Park?
Best to drive down to Stanmore park there as there's a large car park and tube it in.

You will be fine honestly, just don't hang about at final whistle & head for East Ham station for first Hammersmith & City unit to Euston Square ( the pink one on the map). No changes just a 3-4 min walk from Euston Square to Euston Main Line.

Thanks to everyone for the guides here... I've only ever done London aways via coach, haven't been on a train in the UK for donkeys years.
Wycombe away (if they do Villa) is looking the trickier one however.

I'd never do London by coach. booked my train a couple of weeks ago. £41 inc railcard. fine and dandy.

Not much of a difference between coach and train for me.

Coach - about 5 hours but drink a plenty - tea, coffee and juice that is.
Train - about 3.5 hours if you take tube etc into account, plenty of drink until the home trip when usually a dry train coming back these days.

Pros and cons

Yea I've gradually figured this out :/ Spuds away recently was a cockup, with the coach driver going the wrong way, driving us back towards the stadium, amongst built up traffic.
took ages. Ended up on my own wondering around the ground being misguided by Stewards, couldn't find the coach.
I've opted for the coaches in the past though as I've fancied a drink (such as the Wembley days) but I'm not too fussed for this one.

If there's no H&C coming in (on the departure boards) then go Mile End then Bank for Euston. Easy enough. 45 minutes tops.

p.s. Are you allowed to drink on coaches? I always thought they were dry too.
