Too many people on here want the Harlem Globe Trotters and a load of shiny new toys. Rags made that mistake signing the likes of Di Maria and Falcao. I remember the Rags holding a sign up with the message "Thank-you Galacticos" at the start of 2014/5 season, but it went nowhere. You can't sign worldly players (or players being touted as such) just for the sake of it or to appease the masses. .. Well you can, but it won't necessarily work.
I'd say the transfer window is all about shiny new toys: it's is the footballing equivalent of christmas but instead of Santa's list we have Txiki's list. Just like some kids are happy playing with the cardboard box, some want an X-box. However, this is not about producing the Harlem Globe Trotters or collecting Galacticos for the prestige of it, it's primarily about getting the best possible players to implement the system(s) that Pep will play; there is also a commercial factor that has to be taken into account.
The five players being suggested may all prove to be wonderful additions if they end up here - some I think are excellent, or likely will be, some I have no idea - but players like Kroos and Pogba would fit into a Pep side and are players who have proved that they can go all the way to a UCL final. Just look at the teams that have won that competition in recent years, they all have "Galacticos" in their line-ups.
The thing to remember about all the speculation on players, be it in the media or possible ITK's, is that none of them has the full picture and even if they have heard something that is from a good source at any particular point, things change, right up to the last minute. I can give an example of that, I knew that City were trying to buy Mido in one window - everyone did - but what was not common knowledge was that Corradi (IIRC) was going the other way, I quietly included a post to that effect on the MEN on deadline day. Of course, Spurs nixed the deal but a few days later the MEN in one story mentioned the swap that would have taken place, which I am sure they did not take from my post. My source was a German footballer, now pundit; someone very much inside MCFC at the time.
Enjoy the speculation but don't get carried away one way or the other until the bell rings on 1 Sept - is my advice.
