Thailand

An area of the world i sorely now want to visit properly. A good mates wife is from Laos and i never even knew some of the tastes i had with her food even existed.
She can feed an army with top end food and makes it seem so effortless, then it goes to her hubby who mans the bbq, a great husband and wife team.

To this day i have never eaten food like it and i yearn to go and taste it in their back yard (not my mates, i mean Thailand and Laos)

Roughly for 3 weeks in decent hotels traveling the length of the country, what sort of money are we talking flights inc ?
I do mean roughly, as i have fuck all idea about that area of the world.

Really depends on lifestyle. It's the sort of place where you can pretty much live as cheaply or expensively as you wish. Food and drink is cheap, as is travel (usually). Your major expense will most likely be hotels and it really depends what quality of hotel you are after.

Hi Folks,

My wife and I would like to go to Thailand (probably around March next year) we're both around 50, reasonably physically fit, but don't fancy backpacking. Phuket looks great, and relaxing., though we're open to suggestions.

As a total newbie to that part of the world, can you please recommend areas and perhaps travel companies?

Also, much of the searches made so far gives hotels that are including B&B only, is food generally reasonably priced or expensive in and outside the hotels?

Our budget is around 4-5k

Many many thanks in advance to those taking the time to advise!

Edit: Oh, the likes of First Choice offer all inclusive hotels, but not sure that's the best way to go either....

My brother has visited Thailand twice recently on his backpacking excursions. His words to me were, 'you could go to Thailand and live like a superstar for less then a grand a month'. Apparently you can get a pretty decent meal for less then £1 in most areas, so yeah, apparently it's quite cheap!

Down side is there aren't any enforced food regulations, so beware the squits!

Don't worry about the squirts if you are there long enough your body adapts, The roadside stalls are cheap as chips a good meal and beer/soft drink is about £1.50 but the shopping malls food halls are the same and regulated with food hygiene in mind.

It has gotten a bit more pricey than it was, but thats down to our weaker exchange rate, but you can get a decent hotel or beach bungalow for £20 a night if you want decent comfort (sometimes cheaper), domestic flights are cheap and about an hr to any major place from Bangkok/Krungtep and the coaches/ trains a steal but the journey times are long

Whenever Thailand is mentioned it always turns derogatory about the girls, There are millions of normal girls in Thailand that have completely normal jobs. Its a stunning country and the people are great.
Same old stereotyping,it's not worth the effort to contribute a serious reply.

Thanks, that is what i needed, a rough overview.
That sounds like i am taking the piss on this forum haha, no i that is actually all i needed.

I just need to know where not to get chopped up by some fella with a grump on with westerners.
I am happy with a machete and building a hut even going up by river, again just need to make sure my guide's wife is happy with him and no westerners have ever done a runner.

I think though those would be two separate holidays, comfy hotels with air con and the river route with mozzies and risk of guide based death.
Both are appealing.

I lived there for 15 years so if you need any advice or specific info, please feel free to PM me.

You can well expect one bud as i have been watching vids and such about the area. The cave (i forget the name) seems something that should be on everyone's bucket list.
Not just that but all the food, the food is beyond words and that was with ingredients in the usa, Thavorn said we really needed stuff from her homeland (Laos).

There's a place in Liverpool that imports and sells Thai and Lao ingredients and it has an online store.

Me and Mrs Innsbruckblue are managing to squeeze in 3 days in Bangkok on the way back from our Oz/NZ trip this summer. We'll be there from the 24th to the 27th of September. For both of us, it's our first time in the city, so any info on what to see and do would be much appreciated.

What kind of things do you like doing? There's the royal palace and plenty of beautiful temples to visit if that's your thing, nice parks etc but really depends on what you're looking for.
