I always saw Woakes doing that, in that I knew he would mature a bit physically, he hardly looked like he needed to shave when he first got in, added to the fact he works really hard at his game and his action is good and very repeatable (unlike someone like Finn), like you said he's a real team man, he also captained Warkwickshire when Bell was injured earlier in the year, which is an indication of a decent cricketing brain as well, as there were more experienced players he got the nod over. His figures this summer didnt do him any credit compared to how he has bowled, so I am glad this test that was corrected.

Ball needs to look at what Woakes has done after a taste of tests and repeat it. Wood is back bowling and should be close to returning for Durham, I liked the look of him last summer, got something about him. England's seam options have been good for a while and nothing looks like changing that, the competition for places can only be a good thing.

Dropping a batsman for a spinner (do we need Anderson, Broad, Stokes, Woakes and 2 spinners though?) would probably mean Vince going, he looks nice but hasnt scored the runs, like you said he needs to and fast, there are other knocking at the door, but there is a a case for a discussion about it, as I said in the post above, Borthwick has been scoring well and offers handly leggies so he is another way to go. Stokes has been bowling but isnt 100% apparently, maybe he will be a strike bowler going in 3 or 4 over bursts, but dont want to rush him back too soon.

Would be handy if Root could work on his spin but the next cab of the rank (sadly as a Yorkshire fan as we'll soon have no-one left) has to be Rashid. Top 6 bat at county level and his control has improved hugely in the last year or two, has a lovely leg break and his googly is probably better than most of England's off spinners can manage. I know England were concerned about his pace but Shah has shown that you don't need to bowl quick as long as you can get the batsmen worried.

Yes, I agree, I have said I would drop Ali for Rashid for the next test.

Think he was playing the first two days for Lancs then joining up with England ahead of Friday's test at OT.

Blimey, very respectful of Durham to allow that. The vision of England first ahead of the counties has definitely changed somewhat in recent years.

ECB probably wanted him to play to prove his fitness. I doubt Durham had a say. It used to happen in reverse a lot when a test finished they would play the day after at their county part way through a 3 or 4 day game, they just have to be named on the original team sheet.

So why did Stokes play the full game?

Stokes needs the fitness more than Jimmy I suspect as he has been out longer.

England pulled Woakes out of the game where he got 9 wickets in an innings prior to selection this season, its quite common, after all the ECB are paying the players with contracts now not the counties so they hold sway.

Never really gave a second thought to those "central contracts", but I had a quick look;

Okay, it's not Yaya or Shrek type money, but it's none too shabby. Better than working for a living, eh?
;-)
Do they still get a salary off their counties as well?

Depends, if you have a full England central contract then that replaces their county pay - even though they are contracted to the county still eg Jimmy has a Lancs contract still despite his England deal (England pay compensation to the counties)

If you are on an incremental central contract, the county still pays the player, but England have the right to say where they play and will compensate the county if and when this happens.

On top of the central contract they get appearance money as well

The incrementals are very unfair on he club and players, as the club as little chance of replacing the player and the player could have his basic salary 10% of the player he replaces.

Not so much the county as they will get compensated much in the same way the full contracts are, but the players as you say get a fraction of what the full contracts are on.

I meant you can't the county can't plan to replace the players, so Yorkshire losing Bairstow and Balance can't plan for that properly, but Root they would do. Whilst we got Butler for free :)

In that sense they are unfair, however, at least they get compensation now, going back to the last millennium before central contracts, players would get picked for England and the counties would just have to suck it up, often the players would be playing in the Benson and Hedges or the Natwest, the next day after a test had finished and would only get 2 days maximum before a test, to rest and practice with their England colleagues. Lord MacLaurin really did sort out the national team in many ways, which in cricket made sense as the national team were and are the revenue generators in the game, as the paying public were going to watch England but not the counties. Sky did a good documentary recently, with Mark Butcher, about cricket in the 90s, which highlighted how much of a shambles it was compared to now.

Was a great documentary and what Lord MacLaurin did at the time was brilliant insight (although I guess he was copying Australia, who already had it in place I think?). I actually remember there was a bit of a fight against it at the time and not everyone was happy about it. Fast forward to 2005 and the evidence it was all coming to fruition was in plain site.
Also, in that documentary, England actually had some brilliant players in that era but from the coaches to the selectors to the board to the attitude of the counties it was all one big fuck up. Looks like a funny time to have played but we also wasted some serious talent.

As for those central contracts, I've never looked at the salaries before - very interesting. That's big bucks in terms of what cricketers used to get paid and with counties and sponsorship money the top players will be earning over a million nowadays. Good on them, well deserved I'd say and hopefully that's enough to keep them away from the moneybags 20/20 competitions.

Also interesting to see that perhaps even the England management team had given up on Woakes too ;)

Just watching the highlights of today's play (was out of the house in the afternoon). Cracking knock by Root (sorry, "ROOOOOOOOOT"). Plus, it was nice to see the Pakistani lads all congratulating him when he was walking off. Not sure you'd see the Aussies being so generous of spirit!

Superb stuff by Rooooooooooot, seems to being played in a better spirit than previous series against Pakistan. Warne would have said well done be the rest of them wouldnt the smack arsed convict cunts.

My man Woakes keeping his great form up as well, a cricketer reformed, good lad

Wonderful innings by Root.

England didn't do too bad either in the 24 overs before stumps today.
