There's nothing fantastic in the immediate environs of the station. Avoid The Shakespeare by the bus terminus. There's a Wetherspoons called The Willow Walk on Wilton Road and if you go out the station by Platform 1 and turn right, there's the St George's Tavern.

The best pubs in the area are around St James Park tube station where you'll find the Adam & Eve and Duke of Buckingham on Petty France, the Feathers on Broadway opposite New Scotland Yard and the Sanctuary, Old Star and the Two Chairmen on Tothill St. All those last three are decent.

The best pub in the area is probably The Speaker, which is on the corner of Perkin's Rents and Gt Peter St. And the other advantage of being there is that there is a very decent chippy (which is unusual for central London) called the Laughing Halibut, on Strutton Ground.

On a slightly different query , find myself in st.helens Merseyside on Saturday - does anyone know of any pubs in the town centre that will be showing the match?

Railway Telegraph or similar near the overground train station rings a bell. We got pushed in to the Wetherspoons by police on the Gerrard slip day and therefore couldn't watch it live. Bastards.

Why avoid the Shakespear?

Anyone remember the end of season Blues Brothers trip before they played Utd in the cup final? Top top top City away game! The sight of hundreds of trilby hats thrown in the air as the teams came out. Can not see that ever being repeated at a Prem game.

What a great away day that was,I remember it being hot and also some trouble with Chelsea.Saturday will be my first trip back since then.

Be looking to have a few beers and watch the rags and gooners somewhere near to Norwood junction before the match

That Railway Telegraph looks a decent boozer. We didn't go to Thornton Heath station last season. Instead we went via London Bridge to Norwood Junction. The choice of pubs there wasn't too good. The 'spoons was a dump even by their standards so we headed out of there and came across 2 pubs across the road from each other at a crossroads. One was home fans only and the other looked like it had just undergone a refurb so we went in there. It was run by a Chinese family and wasn't too bad - certainly better than the 'spoons plus they had the Everton v Chelsea match on. Reckon we'll head for Thornton Heath this time.

Always go to that Thornton Heath one, last year was home fans only after game though
