Been in Bolton yesterday for the first time in 5 years. What a shithole!! Boarded up shops, shops that are'nt boarded up are crap pound shops or cheap bakeries. Bolton council must be partially responsible for this by selling off large car parks for developement. I was really shocked and saddened by what has been allowed to happen to a once thriving and good city centre. Is this happening all over or is it just Bolton?

All over the place mate. Out of town shopping centres, lack of town centre investment, inaccessibility of town centres, parking and associated costs, poor planning have all over probably a couple of decades caused the collapse of many town centres.

Yep, and the council put up the car parking charges and are now considering on street parking meters. Town centre is dying.

The Trafford Centre did an awful lot of damage to local town centres.

Sale and Altrincham Town centres plummeted, although Alty is making something of a comeback, and Sale to a much lesser extent. Sale is still full if pound shops, charity shops, sausage roll shops and pawn brokers. If it wasn't for the three supermarket chain stores, Sale would be struggling.

Stalybridge.
Used to be quite a busy town years ago with a small market hall. And then Tesco came to town and fucked it up basically, leaving many shops unable to compete.

There are a few pubs and about 4 bookies there now, not much else though. As for "Stalyvegas", not been that for at least 15 years now.

Rochdale is the worst. It's so bad even McDonalds left.

My chosen town centre. Beales shut and that had the best cafe in town. It wasn't losing money so I don't know why they left. Perhaps they weren't making enough. They then suggested that we would be very welcome at the Bolton store. They can fuck off!

I think Rochdale is hanging on. In one survey a year or two back we were second from the bottom. Bottom place was Stockport.

Pretty much on the money mate. Greedy councils should scrap parking charges in town centres that can are struggling, and need all the customers they can get. Free parking Is one of the main reasons supermarkets are winning the battle against neighbouring town shops. Sad really, but that's how it's gone.

I always thought that some of the empty and boarded up shops could be used for any genuine homeless. This would at least give people an address which could be used by them to give to any prospective e
Any town or City that used idle property in this way would then have to describe itself as 'beggar free.'
People caught begging in 'beggar free'
towns and cities would then be charged with causing a public nuisance, or perhaps harassment.
I do have sympathy for the genuine homeless, but the number of people begging these days is beyond a joke.

This happened near us.....local town centre full of charity shops, greggs and Poundlands or boarded up. Council appointed a new town centre manager who's only action has been to increase car parking charges from 20p for the first hour to £1..............guess what...even Morrisons on the edge of town has now shut

Doubled since 2010 in a time that homelessness services have had their budgets halved. What a coincidence.
