Not saying this is going to happen but this could be linked.

Barca CEO Oscar Grau was talking about Messi's renewal and he said "the club cannot exceed spending 70% of our budget on wages"
Possibly meaning,they can't offer him anything till others are off the books,as the wage bill is too high.
He did however also say "January dealings are unlikely, unless a good offer is made to sell one of Barcelona's existing players".
