Apologies if I'm missing your point here but the UK, France, Germany and the USA, for example, are all nations, the EU isn't. All nations are of course a mix of people of different ethnic origins but all are sovereign states. In the examples I've quoted the governments are held accountable by their people. There is a feeling, shared by Trump, that sovereign governments have too little say in how the world functions being screwed by multi national organisations and multi national companies. He of all people should know. Poacher turned gamekeeper? It's not a new or particularly right wing view, people like Tony Benn were saying the same in the 1970s.

They're all nation states. As were New York, California, Texas etc before the articles of confederation. The USA isn't a nation state, it's a federation of states.
