When the World Knows Your Name - Deacon Blue Follows on nicely from the Steely Dan album that gave them their name and the first track is "Queen of the New Year".

Great nomination from @FogBlueInSanFran, enjoyed by most and takes us nicely into the Christmas break. Aja by Steely Dan scored an impressive 7.47 from 16 voters, which is enough for a place in the top 20 of our ever-growing league table. Nice. The Album Review Club will now take a 3-week break...

    Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1987 - (page 218)

It actually took me a few listens on the radio to get into it, but once it clicked, and I bought the album, I loved everything on it.

Retirement....is it all it's cracked up to be ?

I think that building up 28 times the income you need in retirement so that you can retire early means too much sacrifice in important years. For me, at least. We made it a priority to spend whilst the kids were growing up so that we have amazing memories of holidays and special occasions...

Aja – Steely Dan I can’t say that I’ve heard many Steely Dan tracks in my life. “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” and “Reelin’ In The Years” are familiar and are solid pop songs. Funnily enough, since hearing it on a soundtrack somewhere, in the last few years, I’ve played “Do It Again” a lot. Now...

Seems like we like the same stuff! "Paper in Fire" is also in my all-time top 10. "Midnight Blue" just missed out on the list. Another that I discovered via The Stereo Sequence, so glad it's now in.

    Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1987 - (page 218)

Blue Moon Rock Evolution – 1987 Whilst I first got interested in rock and pop at the venerable age of 17 in 1986, it was 1987 where music really exploded for me. We’ve had 1966, 1967, 1971 and arguably 1984 as contenders for the best year in music, but for me, 1987 is a hands-down...

    Holidays

Didn’t know that First Choice were still going. That is an amazing deal. We don’t bother will checked in luggage anymore, apart from when we go to Florida (probably the last time for a while next year). Went to Muricia last week and flew into Alicante, which was the first place we’ve been in...

    Holidays

Sounds great. Was that a late TUI deal? After years of family trips with TUI, we generally use EasyJet and Ryanair, booking our own hotels. But as we hurtle towards 60 and beyond, I can see the ease of package deals and late bargains becoming a thing for us.

Album of the year - 2025

Amsterdam is definitely bottom of the pile. To be fair to Milan, we went in November when it was lashing down with rain, and stayed a bit too far out of the centre (only our 3rd city break when we weren't as good at research and planning). The Piazza Del Duomo and the Duomo itself was the clear...

Album of the year - 2025

Making a late run up my top 10 is an English singer whose name I know but I'd never listened to his music until now. Ed Harcourt's Orphic is a moody and atmospheric affair. Perfect for this time of year.
