The best British film

Another vote for The Third Man, not only does it brilliantly put across the dark underbelly of post-war Vienna but it has a couple of the best lines in movie history - not forgetting the theme tune.

Lawrence of Arabia
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Local hero
Don’t look now
The long good Friday
Shallow Grave
Sexy Beast
Gregory’s Girl
Far from the madding crowd
A man after my own heart. A great list.

I’ll go Zulu. One that hasn’t been mentioned yet is ‘Goodbye, Mr. Chips’.

Goodbye, Mr Chips is an absolute classic. And Manchester’s finest Robert Donat won an Oscar for best actor, beating Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind.

Loads of great shouts in this thread but of the oldies, another that I don’t think has been mentioned is A Matter Of Life And Death. Also, the original Gaslight.

Of the more modern films, it has to be Dead Mans Shoes for me.

Get Carter. Utterly brilliant film. Let's you fill in the gaps and has that twist at the end. Plus Alf Roberts gets it.
