Breaking records/stats thread

I think you have to look at it as points per game to get a fair comparison

1978-79 Liverpool 68 points (P42 W30 D8 L4) 2pts = 68/42 = 1.62 & 3pts 98/42 = 2.33
2004-05 Chelsea 95 points (P38 W29 D8 L1) 2 pts = 66/38 = 1.74 & 3 pts 95/38 = 2.50
2017-18 City 97 points (P37 W31 D4 L2) 2 pts = 66/37 = 1.78 &3 pts 97/37 = 2.62

Ever if we lose on Sunday we will comfortably beat Liverpool for both records. Tie with Chelsea for 2pts but obvioulsy beat them for 3 pts.

Annoyingly Preston 1888/89 record will just beat us even if we win on Sunday (we needed 102 points to beat both records).

Preston 40 points (P22 W18 D4 L0) 2pts 40/22 = 1.82 & 3 pts 58/22 = 2.64
City 100 points (P38 W32 D4 L2) 2pts 68/38 = 1.79 & 3 pts 100/38 = 2.63

Add in winning 18 games on the run and there is pretty high certaintly that we will never see this again. It's a season for the ages. I think as time goes on we will get more credit as people realise that these records are truely exceptional.
Think we can almost discount Preston from the greatest off all-time list, although 18-4-0 is great, no fixture congestion, European nights or crossbars.

Some more context. Arsenal in 6th place are closer in points to Stoke (20th) than they are to us. Absolutely amazing season.

Footnote;- that Chelsea defeat in the 2004/5 season was us :-)

I’ve been going through the possible permutations for the final points margin, depending on our respective results on Sunday:

16 - City lose, rags win
17 - City draw, rags win
18 - City lose, rags draw
19 - results same
20 - City draw, rags lose
21 - City win, rags draw
22 - City win, rags lose

I’m amazed at the mathematical dexterity of some on here. I can only view from afar and be jealous of their ability to add & subtract with such accuracy.

The one I want is the gap between first and second currently held by the scum at 18 points, win at Southampton and we take that off them.
