I've been thinking about this a lot for some reason and while I really wish he wouldn't have gone and given him the shirt, I understand why Gundogan did what he did. Erdogan is a thug, and has absolutely been known to punish dissenters, political or otherwise, in Turkey very harshly. I'm sure Gundo has extended family in the country still and it's probably very difficult to turn down the president when you could just go, smile for ten minutes, and move on instead.

For some more on it I encourage you guys to read a little bit about the Turkish basketball player, Enes Kanter. He plays here in New York and has been an outspoken critic of the Erdogan regime. As result Kanter's father was arrested, he can never go back to his homeland or else he will be arrested, and his family in Turkey has had to publicly disown him.

Erdogan and his supporters want to drag the country of it's founding father's vision of a modern, fair and secular society, back to the dark ages under religious rule. Ataturk would be spinning to see it happening.

Of course none of us know Ilkay's true political stance, but can understand his actions if he has family there, yeah.

Erdogan is no doubt a bad man, although he still has a lot of support in Turkey for seeming to be a strong leader. Many of my Turkish friends either love him or hate him. He’s pretty much a dictator.

As such I can only agree that Gundogan must’ve simply posed for a photo to keep family sweet back home. Erdogan can have anyone arrested at any time... see this about Hakan Sukur who now works in a bakery in San Francisco...
