Zidane resigns

Has to be.

What does this mean for Real? Bale and Ronaldo want out. How do they move forward from here? Are they deliberately moving backwards for financial reasons? Throughout their history they have had periods of outspending all before them and periods of being more frugal.

Bale will stay now. His problem was Zidane.

Ronaldo has a €28m tax bill to pay in Spain and him leaving because of it seems increasingly like it might be on the table.

Smart move by Zidane. Ronaldo 33, ramos and Modric are both 32 Marcelo and benzema both 30. the squad is reaching the end of its life cycle and will need a year or two of rebuilding. Not many big name options left for madrid. Could they try and steal sarri from under chelsea's noses? Or maybe poach an international manager after the world cup

Good time to get out Madrid have an aging squad and will need an urgent major rebuild.
Not sure Zidane is the right man for that.

It sounds funny because he's just won 3 CL in a row but this season was pretty close to complete failure for Real Madrid.

They were absolutely awful in the league, embarrassed in the cup, and then in the CL, didn't top the group, were on the ropes vs. PSG before they had another meltdown, and were on the verge of getting knocked out by Juventus. Meanwhile Barca were heading full steam towards Spain's first invincible season, their 8th league title in 10 years.

Zidane and Real won in the end, but they were on the edge of a disastrous season for 8 months.

He's definitely leaving at the right time.

Exactly. Perfect timing. They've got a big rebuild on the horizon, and he leaves as the manager who won three Champions Leagues in a row in his first three seasons in top flight management. Nobody else will do that again. He has his pick of jobs.

I could see them going for Conte as a stop-gap appointment. It also might persuade Bale to stay to have another chance under a new manager.

Dwight Yorke has already called racism on their refusal to interview him for the job.
