It's not a massive surprise to be honest. They only just scraped into the World Cup in their last game. But it's a shock that they can't produce a better team than that with the players they've got. Yes, their midfield options aren't great, but they've probably got the best attacking options in the world.

Who are half of these players on Argentina's starting lineup? Yet I recognize:

Di Maria, Higuain, Dybala, Lo Celso all on the bench.

I remember watching Argentina just before the world cup started and they had Messi and Lo Celso play in a midfield 2 ahead of Mascherano as the anchor. It worked very well because Messi was very involved as a playmaker, then Sampaoli scraps the plan and tries something new all the time.
